Peugeot 306 1.4 8V Cambelt Change

Recommended Posts

BlueBolt

My brother in law has potentially blown his head gasket, so I thought I'd borrow my mates AutoData book and check over the cambelt change while I was at it, just to make sure there wasn't anything unexpected in there...

Well!! Good thing I did!!!

Have had a look, and if it's a 1997 onwards model, then apparently before tentioning the belt back up, I need to "Remove cylinder head cover. Install valve spring compressor. Tool No 032AE"

WHY???

Has anyone actually done this?? Why is it a suggested thing to do to tention the belts back up?? Do I really need to??

Looking at the "upto 1997" intallation then I wouldn't need to do this. What changed in 1997??

I have a 306 1.4 and didn't do anything like that on the several times I changed the HG.

May I ask what are the symptoms? As the wet linered 1.4 TUs have a habit of blowing the oil to water feeds on the front corner of the block (above the PAS pump) and the give away sign is an oil leak from between the block and the head. That's what happened to mine anyway, the first time!

Be sure to bleed it through too.

They're slow as sin, but an absolute doddle to work on.

The rad fan relay blew, temps were getting hot hot and my brother in law pulled over to call RAC out.

They said the radiator temperature switch was probably gone, but the relay definitely was. He filled it back up with water, but it drank the lot on the way back home (about 35 miles). No sign of water leaking from the outside...

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a temperature switch like we have in the 205's though?? According to my local stealer this one should have a little square control unit instead?? Anything you know about?

Yea, I've found this little one easy to work on so far, nothing that doesn't look easy to get to or anything!!

Can I ask why you've had to change the HG on yours multiple times??

The HG on my 306 has been a tale of woe. I think I'm on my 4th HG in a year, the 1st because the HG had gone, the 2nd because I thought the oil/water thing was the HG again, the 3rd because the oil/water thing came back because of s*itty HG and the 4th because of an air-lock causing the matrix to blow (dash out - what a twat that was!) and HG to go.

Thankfully parts are fairly inexpensive.

Pretty sure my temperature switch is mounted on the rad like the 205s.

if it has aircon it'll be a brown two pin sender in the thermostat housing and a control unit under the nearside inner wing, right about where the ABS pump sits, with the horns and alarm siren.

Thanks WP, it has aircon so this is the thing in looking for. How likely is it that the control unit has gone? They're over £100 new!!

Have you come across the valve spring compression thing before??
