Severe Oil Leak Flywheel End.

Recommended Posts

Adrian247

My recently rebuilt 1.9 engine has developed a severe oil leak at the flywheel end, we thought it was just a poorly fitted gasket on the sump, but we have since redone the joint on the spacer plate and replaced the sump gasket. On starting the car again the leak seems a lot worse, the oil streams down from from the area between the flywheel cover plate and the sump , around the second bolt in from the back of the engine, nearly the lowest point. I am beginning to suspect that the leak maybe coming from somewhere on the flywheel end of the block, such as the crankshaft oil seal or even worse one of the heel joints has failed in the removable section of the block. The only way I can see any further will be to remove the gearbox and the flywheel I guess.

i just wondered if anybody had any other ideas as to what the cause maybe or even a simple fix (doubt there is one really).

Was gonna say it can only be hockey stick seals or crank seal.

If it helps I've got one set of hockey stick seals left over here to save buying a bag of ten ????

Well, dropped the box out today, removed flywheel to find the crankshaft oil seal had picked up and was leaking through the lip at the 25 past position. New seal fitted and bits fitted back on, just got to put the shafts back in tomorrow and few other little bits and we will see if the problem has been cured. Not sure why the seal had picked up as the crank was clean......odd that.
