Be3 1.6 Gti Gearbox Oil

Recommended Posts

willis

Hi,

I just wanted to check that my recently serviced gearbox will be OK or should I change the oil to be on the safeside. Havoline 75W 90 Synthetic was used which I know is a little thicker that the recommended Total BV 75W 80...............

Thanks

not ideal, probably find shifting wont be as slick especially cold, personally I would change it.

You are correct, however the "90" part of the multigrade is almost twice the viscosity at 100degC to the correct "80" part, I have to ask why did you put the wrong stuff in the gearbox in the first place when you knew what the right oil was?

Because I thought gearbox oil was gearbox oil and since it was done by a garage I assumed they would use the correct stuff. It wasn't until after the service was done that I found out!

Simple then, take it back to said garage and get them to put the right stuff in.

Given there's dozens of grades on the shelf at all motorfactors, is it not common sense that gearbox oil is most certainly not just gearbox oil!

As said, if a garage did it take it back, I would not expect to be charged as it was their messup as its clearly stated in Autodata and the Haynes manual that is should be 75w80.

I can honestly say that gearbox oil is something that I've never paid any attention to.

The last 10 years all of my cars have been new 'ish' and have only been

serviced by the manufacturers at the intervals that the car says. Before

this I could barely afford insurance let alone servicing!

Thanks for this, I will get the correct oil put in.
