Exaust Stud Helicoil

Yes, but you'll need a short series drill of the right size to get in there and drill it in situ, even with an angle drill.

It will be an odd size as helicoil drills always are. 8.8mm rings a bell but don't take my word as that is off the top of my head.

If you are feeling a bit rough you could don a cowboy hat and then whilst shouting YEE-HAR put your newly acquired full length drill in the vice and snap it in half using a big hammer. Then re grind the end and hey presto you have a short suitable drill for the job.

Is the thread completely shot? I've had joy in past running a thread cleaner or correct sized tap down it after having to sort out same problem.

I think i'ts deaper in the thread because it was going in fine and then when it got tighter it just total loosened and won't tighten.

Ok I've been thinking (bad idea) because i'm so tight for money at the moment and with no real equipment like drills (student life :/) so I really cant afford to start renting tools and buying extra drill bits.

Using your idea couldn't I just run the tap that comes with the helicoil all the way through and then insert the helicoil instead of having to rent a drill and drill it all out. May be being dumb but desperate times call for desperate measures.

probably best off putting it back together so its drivable and get it to someone who has the kit to sort it.

No, because the helicoil will end up tight so the stud won't go back in. Helicoils are great things, but you have to do them properly for them to work.

Mad Professor
I hate Helicoils, I only use TimeSerts now.

The kits are not cheap, but I have never had a problem with one.

Mad P i'd agree with ya on the Time Serts, we use them in machine bases.

Helicoils are good too, ya just have to do them right first time or yer stuffed!

The time serts aren't cheap, but sure are worth it in tight spaces.
