What Backbox Do I Need?

Recommended Posts

willis

Hi,

I need a little help identifying which backbox (standard) that I require for my car. It is a 1.6 1990 late phase 1.5 ltd ed. It has an uprated one that I want rid of. My local garage ordered in a couple, 1 bosal & 1 eurocarparts, and they were both wrong. I think what I have on there at the moment is a downpipe that is split into two parts (not one with a split down the middle), a join just before the first silencer and then a join before the backbox. Is the one that I need like on the illustration below?

Thanks

Looking at the diagram you have there that's a sleeve type fitment and from what I can see the from what's fitted to your car is an olive type if I'm correct in the terms they use to describe joint types. Think you may struggle to fit a standard back box to the rest of the system as I may be wrong but none of it appears standard.

Following on from what Matt posted, i'd say that's definitely not just an aftermarket box you have on the car, but an entire system from the o.e manifold back.

The 2nd pic looks very much like the downpipe is one that was made by Scorpion many years ago which was essentially 2 sections that became one further down the pipe before linking in with either a centre silencer or straight pipe that ran through to the aftermarket rear silencer.

As it's aftermarket it will be a sleeve fitment whereas any of the ones you've ordered will have been olive fitment. Or if you did get an o.e sleeve type fitment, it's unlikely to bolt on as the downpipe / intermediate section from the manifold isn't also o.e so will probably be a different i.d size.

If you wanted to go back to standard, you'd need to replace the entire system you currently have from the manifold back with an o.e type one.

Saying that, if that is one of the old style / discontinued exhaust systems from Scorpion, someone might pay good £££ for it on eBay as it's a retro mod & they do seem to make good money from time to time, which would put some ££ towards going back to o.e spec :)

Thanks for this guys. That's interesting what you say about the "possible" Scorpion system on there (I did think the downpipe looked rather good). I did want to remove it to make the car completely standard and eliminate any potential power losses due to back pressure etc. but I'm no expert. It is rather noisy on the motorway but that's once in a blue moon so doesn't really concern me. As luck would have it, and because I could see this happening, a couple of weeks ago off ebay I bought a complete standard OE system with the split in the downpipe for £30 (below). If I wanted to could I just fit this to my car and get a new back box? I see from the specs that up to 89' uses a 3 part system and after this uses a 2 part system. What I really wanted was the tailpipe to come straight out like in the above diagram and not point down like in the spec for the later systems. Could I fit either to my car (since they are all olive type) or will only the pointy down one fit the 2 part system? Or will only the straight out one fit the car? I never knew exhausts would be such an enigma!

rear box with that clamp looks like standard phase2, though the pipe from centre back looks to be stainless.

I thought the standard exhaust in that pic looked familiar

Hey Lewis - you made it onto the forum then :) I thought you must be the same guy when I clocked the name/location after I replied earlier.

I'd have thought the olive fitment boxes from the earlier models should still fit the standard late spec dp / centre you collected from me but i'm sure one of the other guys on here can confirm this :)

If you do decide to get rid of the aftermarket 2 port dp let me know as I may take it off your hands as spare for my OMP exhaust :)
