Can I Direct Fit A Pas Steering Rack To A Non Pas 205Gti?

Recommended Posts

Bovien

I want to keep it non-pas, dont want the hassle of installing PAS and the extra problem source. I'll just work my arms a bot more...

My question is if I need any steering colum far the PAS car or will my non pas column me a direct fit?

And can it be from any 205 I get the quicker steering PAS rack?

I know about the xsara conversion, but are having trouble with finding any xsara vts rack and I'm thinking the difference can't be that much from a de-pas rack factoring in the ease of install, sourcing of parts and so.

Also, which if these three would be the quicker steering pas column, that I can de-pas:

I can't comment on what will fit, but my 205 has a PAS rack, without the PAS, and on the last MOT it was flagged up and put on the advisory list as an incorrect rack. If this is something that's going to bother you then it's probably best to avoid them.

There is a big difference between the pas racks. other wise everybody would be getting a 306 rack, as they're common as muck.

iirc, the 306 rack is 3.3 turns lock to lock, but the ph1 xsara is 2.4, ph2 is 2.6 (possibly 2.7), and the 205 is somewhere in the region of 3.3 as well. the 205 pas rack is not really a 'quick rack' in terms of a xsara rack though.

Just to point out, its only a ph1 xsara VTS that ahs the quick rack, having tested 2 ph1 xsara racks in a local scrap yard, they were both closer to 3.3 turns l.t.l.

I swapped a none PAS rack out and the UJ joints are different between none and PAS racks. UJ is hard to find so make sure you get one with the rack. One has splines (none PAS I think) and ones square

Something I found out years ago!

Cant comment on the VTS rack but I think its a straight swap for a PAS 205 rack almost so prob got the same UJ joint to the steering column.

Non-PAS cars came with splined or square columns depending on age. PAS rack are all square I think, but are shorter than the non-PAS column, so you need the PAS column to go with the rack.

ZX 16v has a splined PAS rack, also 2.4 turns lock to lock :)

I've found a 205 PAS rack without a UJ/lower column. But the scrapyard tell me they have a ZX column that fits. Will that do? I'm not clear on if the issues with UJ/columns is if they physically fit the rack or if they can have issues with subframe or general fitting to to 205.

How does the VTS Ph1 rack compare? Does it need a shorter column, or is it a direct fit to the square non-PAS 205 column? I hadnt really given the column much thought, I spent all my energy tracking down the rack!

Thanks

ZX column is too long. You need one from a 205 or 309 with PAS.

I fitted mine using a square drive 205/309 non-PAS column - it's a tight squeeze where it meets the upper column, but it does fit. A number of friends have subsequently done exactly the same and also had no issues.

As above, got a ZX rack with 205 column on mine, perfect fit.

The square drive columns seem to have more leeway with the sliding clamps, and don't forget you can also pull the upper column up a little as well.

So, if I can find a ZX rack that will fit the 205 non-PAS column? Is tha ZX rack then different from the Xsara VTS but with roughly the same 2,4 turns? AND it fits the 205 non-PAS column? That just sounds almost too perfect..

Is it ONLY the ZX 16v rack, do you know? Is that both 1.8 and 2.0 16V or would it come with any of the 8v engines?
