205 Rallye Or Gti?

Recommended Posts

smm3008

Hi there,

When I come out of my apprenticeship in February, I am thinking of getting myself a hot-hatchback. After quite a bit of looking and asking
the older fellas at work, I decided that I'd be getting a 205gti.

Next, I did a bit of researching on them, and found that you can do a GTI-6 conversion fairly simply. So, my question is, would you recommend getting a gti, leaving it standard, getting a gti and converting it, or getting a rallye and converting it? I believe the rallye model was a bit lighter than the gti model wasn't it?

Thanks, Sam

They will weigh virtually the same when you fit the same engine

Get which ever you can afford to run.

A modified car will normally cost you more to insure.

And base models cost allot more to convert, Fuel Tank, Fuel Lines, Suspension front and rear, brakes, Loom, Dash to name a few

Agreed, but I'm sure I'm not alone when I say the fun is in the conversion. I enjoy tinkering and get satisfaction from doing things myself.

I suppose it depends on whether you want to just get out and drive or want a bit of a project :)

I shudder to think what a GTi6 conversion will cost to insure at 18.

Plus allot of converted car's are just plain dangerous, It would be good to have some sort of test when anything is done to any car then at least it gives it a chance.

not sure if I agree that 'a base model will cost more to convert'. I'm guessing if your buying a 20-odd year old car anyway, your budget should also factor in renewing suspension, brakes, etc, so the only extra cost after that is the fuel tank and gubbins

Subframe, wishbones, driveshafts, engine mounts...........

Plus interior Wiring looms, instrument cluster, half a dashboard, brakes, suspension, cooling system, exhaust can all be retained from a gti, not so a base model.

I don't think it is really; granted it's a little harder than doing it to a GTi but not by a lot!

Ok guys, thanks for all of the replies, I didn't realise that there were so many differences between the rallye ang the gti, I thought it basically was a gti but with a smaller engine! So it looks like a gti then.

I shudder to think what a GTi6 conversion will cost to insure at 18.

Haha, I've not looked at that yet, but I've checked out the insurance for a standard 1.9 and it's definatly affordable for me, so if getting insurance on the conversion is too expensive, I can always wait a bit to do it

Thanks, Sam
