Gearbox Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

Gman

I'm running a VTS box with mi clutch and 6 engine, and am having difficulties dropping down to 2nd at high speed/revs.

Heel towing makes it a little better, and it goes into 2nd easily when driving gently, but when diving it some it takes a bit of force followed by an unpleasant crunch.

Given that it seems fine at slow speed, does it sound like something more serious that just adjusting the gear rods?

Many thanks

Graham

Checked the oil in the gearbox ?

PSA gearboxes are notorious for gear oils type used , they do not "like" anything but Total BV 75w-80 .

If you have something else inside and you want to keep the box running problem free , personally i'd dump out the oil which is inside and filled with 2l of Total 75w-80 .

Shifting problems can be as well cause of the gear linkages sloppiness (check for free play ..) or wrongly adjusted , the clutch cable adjustment (try to play a little bit with adjusting the cable ..) .. if none of this solve the issue it'll be clutch/box problem .

This problem still exists, despite swapping the box out for another unit whilst fitting a quaife.

This therefore suggests the problem lies with the adjustment of the rods, unless I have been really unlucky and both boxes have the same problem.

Assuming the box is fine, why would it only crunch when changing gear quickly, and what is the best way to adjust the rods correctly. They are miles gear rods.

Many thanks

As Damir said, what gear oil are you using?

I had to bung in some non-standard stuff when fitting the quaife, but I used standard pug gear oil in the old box and the problem still existed.

How far up is your clutch pedal compared to the brake pedal mate?

I had the same problem, just had to adjust the clutch tighter.

I found when the engine is moving about it affects gear changes massively.

Are you using Miles gear rods?

Miles

Gear Rods make no difference in crunch part, even if they are well out of adjustment where the stick hit's the seats they work the same.

The crunch is where the change is too quick for the box which could mean, Either the synro hub's are worn, Wrong oil, The teeth on the gears are worn which these day's is a huge factor and doesn't have time to synchronize with the next gear

If you decide to keep the box in and run it till it dies try using 75w90, it may well help/mask the problem for a while.
