Pic Request Of Sensibly Lowered 205 Gti's

Recommended Posts

Hello all , after much thought I've decided I'm going to lower my 205 . I've really enjoyed the hooning around bumpy lanes on the standard set up . Great fun , great angles of slip and its really comfy .., only negative I've found is the amount of slip angle achieved if corner entry is slightly ambitious lol .... It's awesome fun but with a handful of lock on its very easy to run out of road . So my plains to lower it a sensible amount to keep everything in check when pushing that little bit harder .

I've sourced some koni yellow adjustables on the purple koni springs , Think there 25/30mm lower ? My plan is to obviously fit them and lower the rear 1 spline ...

Couple of questions then ....

- will my proposed set up lower the car evenly ..

- does anyone have any pics of there car with the same or similar set up .

- the new dampers should stabilise and tidy up the handling nearer the limit right ?

Many thank Jonny .

Mine was -30mm on autofive springs (that have now disitntegrated). The rear here was done using a spline drop and then SBC set it properly and upped it to balance with the front, raised it about 15mm and was perfect.

Explain properly .... Is the 205drivers guide not correct or am I missing something ?

You need to get the torsion bar out and use a dummy shock to set the ride height accurately. Mine was done using the rough spline method originally and was way too low.

So the torsion bar has different splines either side ?..

The torsion bar is a faff but definitely worth doing right, when i initially tried to do it one of the bars was stuck...so the car was either too high or too low. get the dummy shock in (or I actually drilled some holes in a bit of steel at 5mm intervals) and rotate the TB until everything lines up.

Here's mine:

c. 25mm drop on the front, same on the back.

That looks really cool . Are they Eibach springs ??...

Ok so you take your bit of steel with holes in at every 5mm .. Is there a measurement u need to be aiming for in between the shock bolt holes ?

The Koni purple springs are less than the 25-30mm claimed in my experience, more like about 10-15mm or so (with an alloy block XU engine)

Not the best photo in the world, but as you can see, it's nowhere near 25-30mm lower! One "spline" lower on the rear would be far too low to match as that's around 35-40mm, assuming that your springs sit anything like mine did!

I don't appear to have a photo of the other 205 that I fitted them to, but what I can say is that they replaced a circa 40mm set of lowering springs and in the process raised the car up a good inch or more.

Its not exactly wrong but it certainly isn't right either.

For a 40mm drop I recently set Kezzers beam with a 312mm shock bolt centres distance so for a 25 - 30mm you'd need to look at about 315mm imo.

I will be interested to see what mine looks like with a 28mm arb and a set of ant's 21mm torsion bars, its been set to 312mm iirc (mei will know for sure)

312mm and 21mm torsion bars will be sat a fair bit higher than standard! You'll want something more like 300mm for a modest drop.

I recently built a beam for my car with 21mm tb's & set it to approx 298mm iirc looking for a similar drop to SBC front springs.

I can't remember dan, that was a very long time ago  I think ant and Graham are on the money, mine is around the 300mm mark on 21's, I'll get a picture of it soon.

What is the factory original ride height?

I've mine set and it's like a defender

thought so, all I can see is a black blob in the vague shape of a 205 :P

standard 205's do look quite odd if you aren't used to them!

If you set it as per the page in haynes at 330mm bolt centres then it will seem very much like a defender but general consensus on here is that for a good match to the front ride height that about 322mm bolt centres is correct.
