Project 309 Goodwood

I picked this up today and spent a few hours on it.

After a good poke about, I have not found any structural rust yet, there is plenty of time though and it could all end in tears.

I though it was rear engined too  , 1990s style Mongoose back box anyone?:

Superb :-) nice turnaround there Stu. Really great to see neglected cars getting a new lease of life. I presume it still needs all the oily bits attending to?

All finished for the NEC then? :-p

Thanks Rob, it looks better after some elbow grease.

The dreaded oily bits will be tacked slowly, engine and beam are next on the list but only after I am 100% certain there is no terminal rust.

NEC 2014 ;) , yes!

Anthony had big plans for this. What happened?

The lad took it off sale as his cousin was going to have it.

Anthony then got going with his 205 resto and did not have the space/time.

I got it just before the council sent another eviction letter and he had to scrap it.

Cleans up nicely :)

Have you got a mirror for it yet? If not I have a few 309 mirrors in my pile of spares.

As for potential areas of rot;

rear panel between boot floor and where the boot catch is, rot often sets in here on the seam,

drop the tank and poke the inner sills,

inner arches where boot floor meets them,

B-pillars where they meet the sills.

sill rear ends in the wheelarch.

strut tops.

bulkhead seam and area where chassis leg runs down to the floor,

headlamp panels and inner wing seams.

not too many!

My old one seems to have disappeared after it went up to Scotland :(

Thanks Mei, I will start the corrosion investigations next week

No I need a drivers mirror if you have one.

PM me with details if that is OK.

Thanks

After reading the paperwork that came with the car there is a bill for £1200 for a fast road cam and other work from LAD in 1999 when the car had done 33K.

The piston lining is now cracked and the cambelt has snapped too but the cylinder head is in the boot.

Does any one know what power did these had? No LAD gags please!

Miles

Quite often the Fast road cam was just a std cam, It's what I say to allot of people I could sell anything with the title 'Race' or Group 'N' in it without any issues at all as you can race a standard part and charge 5 times as much for it

If anyone knows of any 309 GTIs being broken anywhere in the North West please drop me a PM, thanks.

Some more progress made in the last few weeks.

I have an engine from one of Mark's GTI6 conversions a 75K mile early 1.9 engine. After replacing service items, cambelt and clutch it will be spot on.

I plan on cleaning and painting the engine too while it is out.

New discs & pads are ready to go on with a new rear exhaust box.

The beam is definitely seized and will need a rebuild.

I am getting a bootlid/spoiler and bonnet from Miles on PSCUK and have a mirror and parcel shelf to fit too.

New wheels and tyres in the new year along with the engine being put in and the beam hopefully soon.

Anyhow pictures:

Newly purchased glovebox and wheel/gearknob fitted too

Yes, I know the gearknob is on the wrong way!

Front arches scrubbed and calipers wire brushed and painted with a silver/gold hammerite mix.

nice work.

You have reminded me of a similar car I saw when I worked somewhere a number of years back.. only the car was dry stored with similar damage.. from memory a contractor at the company blew head gasket and left it in the carpark.. after a while it was moved into storage under a building... hummm... will see if I can find out anything about it.

This car was owned by the same family for a good few years and was kept outside for the last 2 or so years but may have been dry stored prior to this - there is little rust on it so that may be the case..

They used to live in/near London so it may be the same car. He moved to the north a few years ago and brought the car with him (no idea how)

If you can find anything out about it that would be great.

Sadly underseal hides a lot of rust and rot on these cars.

I hope you had a good prod around the mudflap panels at the front.

Debris gathers inside and if not cleared can cause rust and rot from inside out

Looking great, was never a fan of the knob so didn't bother getting one when I got my Wooden MOMO!

Jord, yes prodding under the wheel arches revealed no rot yet, dropping the beam and fuel tank will no doubt change that though.

The car looks surprisingly solid at the frond especially in the engine bay/inner wings, long may it continue!

I have been a busy boy recently, at last!

I have painted the front inner arches in hammerite green which is a 98% match to Pinewood. The rear wheels will be off on Monday and the car will be on 4 jacks so that I can clean underneath in preparation for removing the tank and painting it all. The rear arches will be painted up by the end of Monday too.

The parts stash is coming on, I just need a few bits n bobs plus the rear beam sorting and all will be well. Unless you look at the body paintwork, and all is not well at all.

I have started painting the gearbox, AFM and the inlet/fuel rail too and I am really pleased with it. I am not getting it all plated as the budget will not stretch to this but even painted the whole engine bay will be lifted.

The paint in the engine bay looks a bit worse for wear and I am undecided what to do with this but a good clean will transform it, pity about the surface rust really.

There is corrosion on the front panel too, I discovered this when I removed the front indicators but I'll leave that for another day as there are no holes in it, yet!

Still plenty to do but the biggest change will be a clean engine bay and engine and gearbox back in so that I can then fit the exhaust and start on fitting all the new front brake parts. Fingers crossed I can get this done in the next few weeks.

Pictures to follow.

Bugger, it is paint opload stuff on here as I cannot access photobucket from my work PC. Why is there no 'upload from PC' function?
