Central Locking And Toad Ai606

Recommended Posts

ALEX

The car came with an aftermarket central locking system that didn't work, not supprising looking at the state of the wiring so I ripped it all out.

I intend to buy an alarm, A Toad Ai606 in fact, as I've fitted this to my last Gti following Antony's helpful guide from here.

All I needed to do from memory (as it was about 10 years ago) was connect it to an existing brown controller near the steering column.

I have a pair of later style actuators for the doors, one grey, one black, but I dont have the controller as it didn't have RCL as standard , Do I even need one and if so can buy an aftermarket one from an autoelectrician?

Bit lazy not doing my research, which I'll do when I come to fit it, but just looking to get the pieces together for now.

So no need to go into detail, just looking for advice.

Ta. Alex

If you have a non-RCL equipped car then you're going to need a slave motor in the drivers door to get the central locking to work AFAIK. Later Phase 2 GTi's, as I wrote the guide for, require that you just wire into the RCL control module under the dash which in turn drives the door motors, but non-RCL cars don't have that and their drivers door motor doesn't have a motor inside to work without being moved by something else (be it a slave motor or you turning the key in the lock). The wiring differs too, so you can't just fit the later motor from an RCL car.

Oh, and a grey drivers side locking motor is the earlier type usually - it will have two 2 pin connectors on it (3rd pin missing on one)

Thanks Anthony, most useful

I have the door actuators from a GTi (can't remember what year phase 2 AFAIR). I was hoping the grey one was motorised (ill check the pins tonight)

Can I buy an aftermarket RCL control unit or can I use a spare relay as I have a few spare, do I even need it, can it be controlled straight from the Toad?

All the C/L wiring will be my own from scratch and If I have to fit aftermarket actuators then I will, but I like the idea of fiting the Pug ones as they fit neater.

My GTi had a grey drivers side door actuator and that worked by just connecting the Toad to the module on the steering.

I was told by an autoelectrician that I needed a motorised actuator because it didn't lock itself when locking the passanger door. Proved him wrong! (smug face) still need to tell him though as I've not been back since, but I was smug for days after, thanks to following your guide! ;)

Joining in on your question as in also looking at getting a Toad Ai606 alarm for my car, mine had RCL as standard but the board in the roof had burnt out in the past.

Reading this thread am I right to think I should only need the alarm to get it all working? As it already has the standard RCL parts

Forget the item in the roof you only use the control unit under the dash. The toad will, once you've wired it up, control it.

What does this device do? can I make one from a relay or do I even need it and control the actuators straight from the Toad.

There's 6 options in the manual, still trying to work it all out ATM.

It basically acts as a relay for the two door actuators.

I don't think the Phase 1.5 has the unit, although I can't remember now. I fitted my Toad to a phase 2.

Something I found in my old notes - actually If memory serves me right it's Anthony's!

For those of you with Phase 2 GTi's with remote central locking as standard, I'll save you the hassle of working out the wiring - it's a negative pulse based system, and you need to connect the LOCK wire from the alarm (grey) to pin 8 of the underdash locking relay (on the side of the steering column), and the UNLOCK (blue) to pin 6.
