Starter Motor Wiring....

Recommended Posts

Right though this may be a pain on refitting so I took a photo on removal.. this is what I had (working) and ive done it the same

Now my problem comes with the red wire.. I cant see which terminal it goes to.. common sense tells me it goes to the other one to the earth so id fit it on the bottom terminal with the link wire between the starter and solenoid yes..?

theres A awful lot of wiring going on there, all there should be is the piggyback from the alternator then the feed to the starter from the battery so two on the live post, and the ignition switch 12v spade connector into the solenoid, there should be no need for earth as this is done through the engine block. and although a external earth lead between the solenoid and the motor is common it doesn't need to be attended to!

get a multimeter and determine what that red lead is certainly shouldn't be a earth if it is the factory earth point obviously needs attention!

The red is oem and looking at the photos must go on the opposite terminal to the earth no..?

Surely it's the live feed..? Just don't remember where to put it :/

It was working before :/

As Lan said, there should only be the thick cables to the alternator and to the battery, and then the ignition switched live.

Definitely need to investigate the extra terminals on there!

Miles looked it over when he re wired it so can't be anything untoward :/

It may well be your battery feed a multimeter can quickly point that out for you ;), but if it is what is all that other crap on your positive feed terminal on the solenoid I would only expect two leads to be on that post!

what did he rewire? I'm sure he will kindly point out to you how he had it setup if he changed anything!

I don't know what one is what..

There's a little red wire that looks oem (I don't know where it goes)

A big fat black wire

And two thin grey ones.

I think miles said he wired the battery straight to the starter if I remember correctly as my battery is in the boot.. The big black wire is off my battery on sure of it now I think about it more

Edit: ringing Miles at the time would probably made more sense haha

your battery is in the boot then! so you have established that the large black wire is the feed from the battery now all you need it to check which is your wire going to the alternator and then eliminate the other for now.

then make sure your wire with the spade connector is connected to the starter and now assuming that you have a feed from the battery you should be able to start your car.

... and if you don't already have a multimeter nows the time to get one :)

Ahh I see what's going on there then!

You've got one of the thick black wires coming fom the battery, and the other thick black wire going to the power distribution fuse box thing that sits behind the pass headlight. The red will be the feed to/from the alternator.

In which case, put all 3 wires into the same terminal on the starter :)

Look for a small blade terminal on the solenoid, the guys above seem to have lost the rabbit

The wire to the solenoid is the blue wire. He is trying to work out where to terminate the red wire :)

derp  thought he was asking about the red terminal not wire, given that is already connected in the picture

These are the old photos, I can't see where the red one goes though.. Must go to the bottom connector though so the "other one to the big black wire..?
