Isn't it more of a case of "reserves which are economically viable to extract"? And, of course, as prices rise, what wasn't economically viable becomes viable...

A little from column A, a little from column B I'd imagine.

Agreed, this... ^^

I wouldn't even say we'll run out in 50 years. Known reserves (by that I mean reserves that the oil companies will admit to knowing about) have more than doubled in the last 30 years.

In any case it doesn't affect me and I've no shame in admitting I don't really care - I'd rather enjoy burning the stuff while I'm still alive than sit around being miserable worrying about billions of people that don't even exist yet.

Ok, so lets forget about the billions that are already around and bring it closer to home. How about if you / your kids / family experienced this down the line?...

A global energy crisis will happen, its just a matter of time. As a human race we have too high a dependency on oil.

Saying it doesn't affect you is just ignorance.

"reserves that the oil companies will admit to knowing about" - Don't understand this comment, if anything its the opposite and they exaggerate to boost share price. Remember 2010 when some of the big guns got taken down a peg or two in court for inflating reserves?...

I'll try and hunt down the article, but it was fairly credible and spoke about how the full quantity of the known reserves is deliberately underestimated as a means of keeping the price per barrel high, while everyone craps themselves worrying about running out. I think the difference with that business in 2010 goes back to what Adrian was saying about how economically viable some reserves are to extract - thus being "known" about - and the reserves that are actually being explored and extracted at the current time.

I've no doubt that eventually we will stop depending on crude oil, but I don't think it will be this massive "crisis" that will bring life as we know it to a dark standstill. Technology will advance a lot in 50 years and the more it does, the faster it does it. I absolutely believe that our energy woes will be solved before they become this ultimate crisis.

24/7, I agree with your last comments. I also don't think it will be disasterous, although I am extremely curious as to how future energy needs will be met.

Feeding our 205's with V-Power at £5/litre will test our priorities...

Hasn't it got to be Nuclear? One day we'll get to fusion and then we're pretty much set aren't we?

I dont think worrying about if our kids will survive without oil is necesary. I dont have any kids, but if/when I do, if I bring them up in a way that means they dont have any survival skills, then I think thats more an issue with me than the oil.

People have been around a while, and havent always had the benefit of fractional distlation, I'm sure we'd survive again without oil. In fact, I think some bloody interesting innovations/inventions would come about if we suddenly had to find other means to power things.

And we'd also loose a bit of weight!

Which brings us to a whole new strand of environmentalism, doesn't it...?

What's the world's biggest problem? Overpopulation.

So what's the best way we, individuals, can resolve that issue? Not reproduce. Bing. Problem solved as best _we_ (individually) can.

Even better, that leaves us more money to spend on toys and cars and stuff and beer and things WE want instead of brightly coloured plastic that'll be ignored within a month...

Speaking of which, we've just bought a used lawnmower off a nice little old lady locally. In her barn, there's a car under a dustcover. Belongs to her son. Been there 15 years. Metallic blue 205GTi 1.9, immaculate, bog standard... No, not for sale...

I think the oil would last a long longer if parents didn't mollycoddle their kids and drive them to school, bus or walk FFS!

or bike even! :D

My commute is plagued by the school run causing jams at 4 places which can over double the time it takes, so much so I can ride nigh on the same route on my bike in the same time, and its 18 miles!

I'll be honest, I'm more in favour of mass genocide to thin out the population a little.

I think population is a problem at the moment because we havent had big enough wars for a while.

This won't happen within out lifetime at the very least.

This doesn't really help the billions who will be facing a much more dire situation in 50 years...

I don't worry too much about dwindling resources. And even though I'll be a dad soon, I don't particularly worry about how it will affect my offspring either. If that makes me ignorant, then so be it.

Fact is, with all the bulls*it going on in the world right now, and with all the bulls*it in my life (and most other people's) I simply don't have the time to worry about something that MIGHT affect my son in many decades to come. As selfish as it may sound, our future generations are just going to have to adapt to whatever the situation is for them, the same as we have. We all look at the future as if it's so bleak, but who are we to presume that?

Without trying to make this a personal dig at anyone, I always find it somewhat hypocritical for people who still live a consumerist lifestyle to lecture others about our impact to our future generations. Especially so on a god damned car forum! I'm sure we all do our bit to help - recycling and so on - but until you make proper sacrifices in life and shun our current way of living, you don't (IMO) have much right to talk about how our current use of resources is impacting the world. I had this very same discussion a few weeks ago over on Alfa Owners, and the point I made then is that if you really believe in the damage that the human race is doing, then token gestures (bit of recycling, reducing your electricity use, running a more efficient car etc) are not sufficient to make a real difference. If you truly believe in saving the world for your offspring, you'd shun modern ways and become completely, devotedly self sufficient. So basically, move to a hippy commune and grow your own food, make your own clothes, and produce your own energy. And one of the responses I got to this was that some members had gas guzzling cars (one being a Ferrari) but this was OK as they only used a few times a year so it didn't use much fuel. No no no no. If you are that concerned with slowing down the usage of resources, you don't excuse your own use by saying "I'm good for 95% of the time but every once in a while I treat myself and use a s*it load of fuel for fun".

Lecture/rant over. Peace out :P

The irony of it is, to go completely self sufficient, you need a large wad of cash! which involves spending time being non-self-sufficient to save up to go self-sufficient.

That is of course unless you already own a plot of land outright, and have permission to dwell on said land.

On the flip side, one person going self sufficient wont make a pinch of difference to the rest of the world.

"a little"...?

If we rid the world of all the oxygen-thieves, chavs, gits, wastes-of-space, knuckle-draggers, eejits and other similar undesirables - just think how wonderful it could be. We could all drive HYOOOGE v8s and not have to worry about sustainability in any way, since even the scarcest resources could last for many generations.

Problem is, if you look at the most intelligent and the least intelligent people in the UK and USA, it's the lower end that are breading the most. Evolution in action, right there!

Unfortunately that'll be the link between wealth and inteligence being emphasised. Its well documented that poor people reproduce more, they also tend to be less educated.

We all know that our education system is f**ked, but we really need to forget everything else in GCSE that is failing and concentrate on sex education, otherwise we'll never get out of this cycle and it'll only get worse.

Soon enough there'll be an antibiotic-resistant superbug to do a little population control for us.
