I Just Got My Photos From The Bodyshop! No More Dodgy Paint...

Recommended Posts

brian j

I've been getting more and more jealous of the stunning 205s on here recently, because mine was painted badly before I bought it and has either micro-blistered or reacted on every panel and the paint was peeling up from the masking edges. So... After some friendly negotiations with my wife, the budget was found to fix the dodgy paint on my 205.

I was after a proper job, without completely breaking the bank and I font know any decent bodyshops where I live now so I took a recommendation and have been nervously waiting for a month to see the results.

These arrived yesterday in my email. I can't wait to see it in the flesh. Hopefully it will be ready tomorrow.

Looking good Brian - I assume it's been resprayed in the original Steel Grey colour?

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of ballpark figure is this costing and how much (if any) of the strip and prep did you do?

Anthony,

Yes - it's staying steel grey!

I stripped the mudflaps, side trims, and all badges and slatted panel, and sourced new bumper fixings so they could trash the old ones. Apart from that, I did nothing - I don't trust my prep work enough and I don't want to give an excuse if the paint reacts or sinks etc.

They stripped everything apart from the sunroof frame to paint it (they weren't 100% sure they could do it without breaking the screws and felt it wasn't necessary, so I trusted them) and did all of the prep. They are re-blacking and refitting the bumpers and sunroof trim, and spraying up the new front and rear bumper red trims to match.

I agreed on £1500 all in, but I will end up paying extra because the front screen cracked taking it out. They had the car for a month though, so they could fit in the prep work round other things to keep the costs down.

Given the proximity to London, so long as the finished product looks good, I am more than happy with that.

Looking good and at quite a good price too.

I can't see any of the trim rivets on your doors, is it just the photos or have you found another way of fitting the door trims?

They are still there. They just don't show up well in the (poor) photos.

That sounds very reasonable price wise, particularly considering that they did most of the strip and prep.

I'll be looking for someone to do mine, probably later this year, so if yours is as good as it appears in the photos I may pay them a visit, particularly if they're "my" side of London :)

PS. Slightly hard to tell, but are those C5 wheels behind the 1.9 alloy looking 306/406 hubcaps?

Anthony, I'll let you know what it looks like in the flesh as soon as I know! So far though, they seem to have been very good and pretty straightforward about everything. They had a classic Ferrari in when I was there last that is looking good.

I'm afraid the wheels aren't that exotic. They're my winter wheels, 14" 306 steels with winter tyres and the 1.9 look hubcaps. I'd rather they were 15" but the price was too good to turn down, and they are the "correct" winter tyre size of 175/65 14.

They don't look too bad, but they are a little odd when you give them more than a casual glance.

That looks great indeed and the price is very reasonable taking into account that they did the prep work.

So,

Please excuse the fact that it is covered in tree sap and so about half as shiny as when I collected it (My road is tree-lined and it happens in about a day at the moment!):

Still to do is:

Mount the passenger spotlight and protector.

Mount the front mudflaps back (not sure about rears...)

Wash and polish!

Overall I am very happy with the job done, but miffed that the bodyshop lost the mountings for the passenger driving light (If anyone can spare the half-round plastic spacer I can sort the rest...) and also found they have scratched the roof mounting the sunroof trim back, so it is going back on Friday for them to look at how they will sort it...

Looks bloody brilliant - the full package. It's nice to not only see a nice looking paint job, but the smaller details such as badges fully silver and clean number plates going back on it. You should be realy proud of it.

Enjoy it Brian.

all in all i think they have done a fantastic job for the price and i would certainly like more details from you for them as i would consider them for mine :)

it looks amazing in photos and i am sure looks even better in the metal!

i am sure you will no doubt make a lot of drivers of both 205 gti owners and lesser ( non 205 gti's lol ) cars jealous too!
