Cracking Noise! When Steering / Pulling Away

Recommended Posts

damo

Ok maybe the wrong area but here goes.......

I though I had a duff drive shaft due to clicking so replaced those on my CTI. When I steer (Standing still / crawling speed) or pull away from a standing start I get a small cracking or creaking noise??

Any ideas as it sounds like somethings straining or something.

Possible engine mount? (Although I replaced the gear box one already to a BBM one as the rear mount.

Cant see anything so after a few pointers on what to look at as a possible quick find.

top mount bearings are most likely candidate.

right got a bit further on this. Was around a friends and he noticed my wheels moving!! Basically on a slope, the wheels move 10 mm back from a standing start (centre). If in reverse they do the opposite movement!

So the cracking is the drive shafts when in drive / clutch engaged.

My CTI has the S type with bones so the engine looks to be ok on the mounts and doesn't move so could the wish bones be sliding on the anti roll bar as its fixed in the middle or still the top strut mounts are the source?

so they swing a little back and forward depending on the drive to the wheels. hope this makes sense!

Jack it up and get the wheel off to inspect it, sounds like the rubber bush that joins the arb to the track control arm is shagged.

Thanks for the pointers so far, well I still have not found the smoking gun for my issue! The cars been jacked up and nothing really moves!!!

There is a little play on the ARB to wish bone connector bit but nothing bad.

I took some pics of the possible area -

So looking at that area there's a gap between those washer things! Do these need to be tightened so the gap is say 1 mm ??

Is this my problem area for the wheel movement forward and backwards?

I'm not your friend. The wheel effectively judders when pulling away.

those are track control arms not wishbones, and those bushes appear to be shot.

dont waste your cash on gti stuff, base model tca's are dirt cheap complete, just get a pair and bung them on.

Damo is loaded anyway so he won't be fazed with high priced gti stuff. Imo gti stuff should take more of a beating than base models stuff.

To be fair, for what you want out of the car Damo I would just replace the control arms (with decent quality ones, not ebay cheapies) and get back out and enjoy driving it with the roof down. By the time you've fitted worn used GTi stuff with £6 droplinks (your words) you'll be no better off.

Well got the things off after a lot of pain!!!

rubbers were shot, one stayed on the ARB and both left the metal inner bits on so was a challenge to get those off!

Finally chiseled them to get them spinning then mole grips to finally remove the bush bits!
