Sump?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys my I’m checking up on something I’m just having a quick read through my Haynes as normal and I have stumbled across the sump section I'm going to replace my sump gasket as it looks like the previous keeper has just slapped a load of sealant in there.

It mentions that some models were fitted with a sump spacer is there any way of telling without removal and will this need replacing at the same time also would you recommend just bolt your gaskets up like on most things or do you apply a thin layer of sump sealer thanks

Slo

the spacer is about 10mm thick you can't miss it if you had one, block | spacer | sump. I think most sumps were fitted with sealant mine is you can see it

This should be the majority of the factory 1.9 GTI engines, a 1.6 never had a spacer / stiffener plate fitted.

As said, you can't miss if your car has one.

I use sealant for my sump over a gasket now anyway.

General rule is;

Alloy - sealant.

Steel - Gasket.

however since roughly mid 90's pug have used sealant on the steel sumps instead anyway.
