What Would You Do?

Have an annoying dillema on my hands,

Havn't done any work on the gti for about 3 months now as i keep losing interest and there is so much rust to tackle it just keeps putting me off.

I keep having this new idea of wanting to out subaru running gear, engine and 4wd into a small car like a 205 or 106,

Keep thinking about just cutting the rotten floor pan out of my 205 gti and using that as the base for the 4wd project,

But then i think how much it would be better to carry on trying to restore it to factory spec, replacing all panels ect and getting rid of all the rust.

what do i do :?

You've already said that you keep losing interest in the current build...I'd think about being radical...

Do what YOU want to do - not what you think people will want you to do.

Im in the same boat as you, restoring my 205, however my shell is alot cleaner than yours, it still make me think i should torch the place, lol, but im starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel and it feels great.

would i do it again? nope, if i had another 205 i would do that same conversion your talking about. so to you i would say do the conversion, build something mad! it will prob inspire you more to get out there and finish it.

I dont want a subaru, i hate them with a passion, but they have good strong engines and running gear to match, i want a little toy but dont want to spend thousands turboing a small TU peuegot engine that is still front wheel drive.

i want the looks of the old peugeots with the speed of the jap car.

if i can find a bigger lock up i will strip the 205 right down to the bare car, and go from there but at the moment in the small garage i have i can only to small bits at a time and its hard work and puts me off.

to be ohnest im probly just dreaming with the hybrid build, i will probly get on a finish the 205, and maybe do it to the 106 instead

i prefer desighning and fabricating new stuff than restoring, but i change my mind all the time.

I wouldn't call the EJ20 a "good strong engine" an XU is far better I think. if you steer clear of the MI head

Don't get hung up about FWD thing, have a look at how capable Colin Satchell's 205 is :D

Many jap cars are all show but aren't really all that quick.

that would be the common perception, however see Colin's video from Mallory, where he beat the 400+ bhp Murray Audi 80 Quattro...

Yeah sorry, to be fair I was referring to average drivers such as myself. When I had my Scoob I felt like a driving god, though sadly I am not!

yeah but you have to spend ALOT of money in a fwd car, ive been there and done it with a 315 bhp corsa b. all wheel spin and no go, i wasnt prepared to shell out for expensive diff tyres suspension ect

Why not just buy a sorted 4wd car and carry on restoring the 205? It's going to be one hell of a conversion to put the Subaru gear into a 205, and a whole lot longer than your current project, and probably much more expensive in the long run too.
