1.9 And 1.6 Performance Cams

Recommended Posts

lahondal

Hi all!

Can a Xu9 298º cam, and a Xu5 298º cam have a different powerband?

Can the Xu5 cam be more wilder, although the cams are of the same overlap?

Thanks!

Are they not exactly the same cam so the power band won't be any different?

are you asking so you can fit one from the other? what's the reason for the question?

manufacturers don't tend to distinguish between the XU5 and XU9 engines, but due to the nature of the engine a 1.6 will rev higher and have a narrower powerband.

The problem is that I have a 1.6 engine which should be very revy, but It dont like to rev past 7000. Then, searching the problem I notice that the cam is a 298º degree cam but designed for a 1.9.

Its a Catcams 4900368 and the specs are:

Inlet/Exhaust

-Duration at 0.1mm+cl: 298º/298º

-Duration at 1.0mm+cl: 260º/260

-Max Lift: 12.50mm/12.50mm

The similar 298º cam for a Xu5, have 271º duration at 1.0mm, and a little more lift, 13.00mm.

Thanks for the replies.

its an 8 valve, not many rev past 7k  even a 16v barely makes power past 7k.

its not jap ;)

I hoped would be a revy engine, but in the end...

So the best thing I can do is converting it to 1.9? It will not be the revving engine I like but it will make more power...

Thanks all for the replies!!

totally depends what you want, you could probably get similar results dropping a 100% standard gti6 lump in there!

I found my gti6 to be much lazier than my old 8V 1.6. Certainly tons more power but the throttle response is not as good - down to the heavier flywheel i guess.

but certainly much easier than faffing around with cams and tuning the 8V.

just out of interest what the hell did you want it to rev to

and why?

i was told it was possible to drop the limiter and rev the balls out of a 8v

to what gain?

peak is at 6000, limiter at 6200, for a reason, i.e there is no power any further....

granted if you are on a longer duration wilder cam the revs may need to go higher to reach that peak, but you wouldn't be doing that on a standard induction system for sure.

what a random comment,

the gti6 flywheel is barely heavier if at all, its a square design (86x86) so inherently is quite revvy, I would imagine if you have experienced a tired example in a 300 kilo heavier 306, them that may be the impression gained.

but a healthy example in a 205 it certainly is no contest.

my 1.9 does the job i want it to, it keeps up with my mates jdm dc2 up to around a 100 then i'm out of steam don't think it was made to do that much more.
