She Saw Daylight For The First Time In Years ... But Refused To Run :(

Recommended Posts

Chris205GTi

The time has finally arrived for me to either get my 205 running again, or sell her 'as-is' / scrap. Moving out of my current place at the end of June and have no room for an extra car.

Today we pushed her out into daylight, fitted a new battery, key in the ignition, all the electrics spring to life, ready to turn her over and .... nothing :( - fuel pump is making noises but not even a blip from the starter motor. So plan is next weekend going to attempt to pull that out and have a nose (though I'm no mechanic).

Little worried she's been sitting just too long and given up, hopefully her day in the sunshine shows there still something to live for :P

Right, now to search though the technical forums this week and see if I can find any similar experiences :)

Is the starter getting warm when you turn the key?

These starters can be notoriously sticky, don't write her off just because of that!

Stick it in first gear, push the car a bit. Put it in neutral and try starting.

In fact if it really has been a long time, perhaps you could pull the ht leads off and turn it over to get some oil pressure.

Yeah agreed with the in gear rocking, i have to do that once every so often. Do you get a starter relay click when you turn the key?

As above I'd give the starter a good whack first.

Rolling it is probably a smarter idea though..

Unfortunately when you turn the ignition, there’s a single click and then nothing, no noise from the starter motor or relay, so assuming it
might be a bad earth somewhere – at least it’s a bank holiday this weekend, so got a nice 3 days to try and figure out what’s going on :)

Yes, rock it. The single click is the starter solenoid. Put it in fifth gear and give it a proper good rock. If that doesn't work, give the solenoid a knock with a bit of wood. If that doesn't work take a look at the connections.

If the starter is new and the solenoid is clicking everytime and it starts every few attempts then it can only be the crappy wiring from the battery to the starter itself which by now will be on its last legs on almost all 205 that have lived out in the elements all their lives wiring does wear out especially when exposed at the ends

When this happens the quickest an easiest way is to take a new live feed directly from the ignition under the dash to the solenoid. Takes about half an hour and problem solved.

brown multiplug.

Try running a wire direct from the solenoid terminal on the starter & touch the other (bare) end on the battery positive terminal.

Hi. Brown plug as above mate. Or rocking and hammer trick. Will it bump start? Fingers crossed you fix the problem.
