Gti6 Wiring Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm part way through my GTI6 conversion and need a little clarification on a couple of issues, as my car previously had an S16 conversion done by the previous owner so I've some none original wiring that is causing confusion.

I've used the brilliant guide on here to splice the two brown plugs from the 205 onto the GTI6 loom, however I still have a lot of wires running from under the dash and out through the same hole in the bulk head. Can I just trace these back and strip them out or should there be some original wires still going through the same hole as the main loom?

Second question, whats the best location for the ECU? Mine had the ECU in the engine bay, but I've heard its not a good idea due to heat & moisture. If not where should it go as the lead on the ECU plug end doesn't look very long.

Once I've got these little issues sorted I just need to workout how to rewire the Clifford Alarm from the old loom into the new one!

Sorry if any of these questions seem stupid, but I've searched for the answers without luck and I've made the newbie mistake of trying my first conversion on a car that's already been messed with.

Any help would be very welcome.

Putting the ecu in the engine bay isn't a problem imo, most newer PSA cars have had them there for over 15 years & if they are in the correct ecu box they are fairly well protected. The 306 hdi ecu doesn't have a box at all & they are fine.

Have you removed all of the previous S16 ecu conversion loom & did the previous owner fully remove the original jetronic ecu wiring?

You'll still have the wiring for the reversing light, other engine sensors, alternator field wire & starter solenoid wire running out into the engine bay from the under dash plugs along with those you've connected into the GTI-6 loom but you should be ok to remove any other unused wires left from the previous conversion imo, just double check each wire before you strip it out.

Thanks for the reply. Putting the ecu in the engine bay will make life a lot easier. The previous owner hadn't used a loom as such. Just appeared to have run some extra wires to take feeds from where needed using some interesting joining methods, such as stripping off some outer cable and wrapping the end of the new wire around it with some insulating tape over it!

:o :o

Strip it out, including the original ecu loom (if still fitted) & do things properly with the correct wire grade & connections, otherwise you can be making a timed fireball.

Consider it binned. With hindsight I'm quite glad it was a non runner that I started to take apart. Other wise the first I might have known about the bodges would have been shortly before the call to the fire service! :(
