Swapping Steering Column

Recommended Posts

shooter mcgavin

I'm fitting a pas rack from my early 309 (round u joint) and noticed my 205 column has the square u joint. I popped the lower joint out expecting to just swap the shafts and joints over only to find the 205 one is in two sections and the lower is half the size of the 309 one.

Can I simply swap the hole steering column over

I don't get what you are asking?

Your PAS rack has the round splined fitting, use the splined lower column, it needs to be PAS type as it is shorter than the non pas Splined type, square type obviously wont fit.

What I mean is will the entire column on the left (309) fit in a 205

yes, the upper is the same part from 88 on, as long as the lower will fit the rack then it'll fit as well.

Haha now I'm confused

The 309 set up on the left is one complete part from the steering wheel nut all the way down to the u joint.

The 205 set up is in two parts an upper and lower. The upper is still on the car with the wheel attached. The lower is in the pic on the right.

309 was an 1987 and obviously diffrent so I think it's going to be easier to pick up a pas lower shaft.

Is that not a picture of an upper and lower column? I.e the part on the right fits into the UJ of the one on the left, and then that goes onto the rack?

No on left Is the complete set from the 309, you can see the nut at the top that holds the steering wheel on. The 1st pic shows its one shaft with no joins at all.

The right is the lower section from the non pas set up
