Ma Box Shaft Removal..

Recommended Posts

MiniGibbo

Right I have a slight dilemma.. I need to replace the bush on the mount that is half way along the longest drive shaft (offside) and have a couple of questions

Do I need to remove the shaft and mount to change the bush..?

If I do, do you just pull the shaft..?

And to refit do you just push it in..?

Thanks.

Ive just done the exact same thing, firstly the wront way, then the right way.

I assume its the engine mount rubber bush that your changing? If its a standard soft bush or a powerflex one that comes in two halves, them you can do it in situ, however if its a BBM or solid mount you'll need to do the following:

First i tried to change it without removing the shaft. it took me two days and I mangled the new mount getting it in.

I then tried it the right way:

to take the shaft out, there are two L shaped bolts (hockey stick sort of thing) in the mount itself. you need to undo the two nuts on the gearbox side of the mount which holds these bolts in, once youve loosened these enough, you need to turn the hockey stick end round so it is out of the way of the intermediate bearing. then with a sharp tap from the gearbox side of the intermediate bearing with a large screwdriver and mallet/lump hammer it should break loose and come out of the carrier and out of the box (MAKE SURE YOUVE EITHER DRAINED THE BOX FIRST OR OR HAVE SOMETHING UNDER IT TO CATCH THE BOX OIL!! also a good Idea to wrap a bit of plastic bag round the downpipe, unless you like the smell of burning box oil later!)

retreive shaft. and then place jack under engine and remove 4bolts that attach the mount to the block and the one bolt that attaches to the subframe, and remove mount.

Twat out old mount, press new in.

reattach mount (REMEMBER to put the bolts in the right holes, theyre different lengths)

put everything back together

hope that makes sense kind of

Thanks I currently have it all out of the bay so imagine the box and shafts all intact on the garage floor..

And yeah it's a bbm bush going in :/

So I don't need to remove the whole shaft just the outside half..?

Thanks

yes you do need to remove the whole lot, as its the inner half that goes through the bracket.

its not a good idea to split CV boots, its a bloody messy job.

I suggest you just look at stuff (and read the haynes manual) you should have figured it out given you've got this far ;)

p.s, that's already a BBM mount so probably fine, do check the fork end one though.

dont let me scare you off the bbm bush! it'll go in fine if youve got the mount on the floor, but I was trying to do it from under the car with a lump hammer, and with the tu5 lump, there's a senser right in the way, so I couldnt get a decent swing at it, so i was just doing thousands of tiny taps to try and get i in and eventually it deformed. I'll get a photo of the mess I made of it later if I remember.

I ended up using a powerflex black series one in the end, as its in two parts so you can push it in with your hands, seems to be ok so far, but doubt its as good quality as the bbm one

Is that a bbm mount I have already then..?

I know the previous seller said it had a hard bush somewhere but without proof put it down to bull..

That'll save me a lot of hassle if so :)

The fork bush is rubber, I have a grp A nylon one to go in
