Brake Master Cylinder Advice

Recommended Posts

Mad Professor

Good day all.

I am looking for some advice with regards to getting a new brake master cylinder for my 1990 GRD.

The old brake master cylinder was made by "Ate" and the only other marking I can make out is "19".

Now I have just gone to "SES Autoparts" to buy a new brake master cylinder.

I have even SES the car full Reg, the date of manufacture, and told them it's a "Ate" brake master cylinder.

I have been supplied with a new brake master cylinder in TRW branded box, Part Number: PMD188.

Inside the box is a Lucas brake master cylinder, and stamped on it is 18612T.

This is already starting to ring my alarm bells, so before I left SES, I asked them to confirm this is the right item.

I even should them my old "Ate" unit, as I had removed it, and brought it with me.

The sales guy confirms that PMD188 is the right replacement part for my car.

I then noted that the end of the brake master cylinder, that presses on the plunger in the Servo is not the same size.

Old "Ate" brake master cylinder, ID: 10.64mm, OD: 13.96mm.

New brake master cylinder, ID: 13.67mm, OD: 16.96mm.

So I now have this new part, that is not the same as the old part.

The sales guy at SES looked on his computer for aprox 10-15mins, but looked very confused, and ended up just saying fit it and see.

So I have now spent £64.27 + vat (£77.12), On a part that I am not sure is right or fit for the job.

Can any one please advice?

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

I'm not sure what diameters you are measuring but standard diameters are 19 or 20.6mm items.

brands matter not as long as they fit, I have used several from GSF boxed as Bendix Girling and Bosch for under £40, probably more expensive these days as it has been a while, and you often get better prices in your local branch ;)

personally I would take it back if possible and get one of the above, I guess you suffer from Island tax?

Any pictures and or diagrams?

Best Regards.

Refers to the internal bore of the MC. Base models are 19mm, GTi are 20.6mm.
