What's Happening!?

Guys ( and girls!) it's been nearly four long years since I've taken any real interest in this forum,or 205's, for that matter, but I'm looking at my 205 rusting away thinking I must do something with it. I was planning on a full respray, money has shelved that, so the idea is to weld it up, get some new trim and bumpers and enjoy it. BUT, and a big one at that, wtf has happened to the peugeot world?! People getting f***ing silly thinking its justifiable to charge £105 for a piece of poxy red trim insert! I mean, come on, people cannot be serious!? Peugeot has nla'd tonnes of stuff so out come the greedy pigs!

Seriously, I'm now thinking about tearing the twat to bits and going Japanese or ford where bits are actually available and the great Internet community sticks together and looks after one another!

It's been 14 years of gti ownership but I'm starting to loose it now.

Rant over!

Scrap yards are still a haven, and people like Tom Fenton, cRaig and Stufari making/ordering bits here and there will help.

It's also surprising what is actually available past NFP. I quite simply don't buy from eBay.

I agree with your sentiment about there being folk out there taking the piss, BUT, I have a few mates into Fords, and the situation is just the same with in particular trim parts for the 80's cars, so just the same as 205's really.

Yep, expensive parts is one of the downsides to the 205 rapidly moving into bona fide classic status. Notice things like the £100+ plus red trims have been on ebay for over a month now, so they arent exactly being snapped up at that price!

Plus if prices stay this high for things, more people will be motivated to look into repro parts hopefully :)

you want parts availability, get a modern car ;)

80's fords are a nightmare and always command silly money. Mk1 fiesta's (partly 70's I accept) are stupid. I got mine with good test and only 63k on the clock for £400 nearly 6 years ago, i'm now selling it as a rusty shell and getting £200. wings and front panels aren't available and a good fiesta is one considered to only require wings, sills, rear arches, inner wing and boot floor welding haha

Afternoon,

Come back down to one thing - Supply and Demand.

As the 205's are getting rather, the supply of parts dwindles and the cost increases. This is the same with every vehicle of a certain age and as I work for JLR (also owned a VX220 turbo), I can honestly say that £105 for a piece of red trim is not excessive.

The days of really, really cheap parts are probably over and the costs are now on the increase.

I’ve seen the £105 trim insert too and I'll join you in this rant as I'm with you on this one!

One of the main characteristics of why the 205 was so popular was because it had a good price/fun ratio!

If I have to spend £6K and invest many hours restoring one then I'd sooner buy something else with a similar ratio.

Retro appeal of the 205 is a bonus, but there's more than just the 205 out there.

TBH I've been fed up seeing the part I need on Ebay going for the same price I could get the whole car

(a CTi near me went for £180! just recently with an intact red trim insert! LOL). But I just don't have space for another car.

I was going to restore another GTi after the CTi, but not now.

I'll finish the CTi and It's the Last Pug I'll ever own, as I won't ever be buying another French wank piece of junk again!

I could almost justify the price of parts 10 years ago, but now they're 10 times more for the same piece of cheap crap that breaks if you look at it too long.

Whoever is buying those parts on eBay for the silly money they are asking, then shame on you.

You’re either a mug or obviously earning too much money!

I think it's being able to buy cars for pennies that's given us clouded vision..

I distinctly remember my first year of 205 ownership constantly being amazed how cheap parts where.

Most parts are still cheap, both in absolute and relative terms. Running (rather than restoring) a 205 still costs buttons compared to most other similar cars.

I think the problem is that people have got too used to the price of everything being next to nothing thanks to the cars being so cheap and so many getting broken for parts, and now that is no longer happening to anything like the same degree, coupled with more people buying them as a classic (rather than just a cheap toy) and restoring them means that prices for some parts are rising - supply and demand, as said above.

I think that people need to look at other modern classics for some scary prices - VW Corrado specific parts (eg body panels) are a good example.

Prices for both cars and parts, especially non-consumable GTi specific parts, are only going to go up just as it has done for other classics over the years.

what's changed - "back to standard" is the phrase most commonly heard...

"scrap it" - is heard less and less.

more and more welding work on the bad bits seems to be the norm, shells are binned more infrequently

No one wants to pay much for anything simply because it old, i've had a complete phase 1 cti interior minus seats but including a good manual rack and full column and heater on sale for almost a year and not a single reply although i did have 1 or 2 asking me to split

If I didn't have enough to do myself, I would seriously look into getting some red trim repo parts made up. Anyone know of a company who could/would be willing to help out?

I made red trim strips for the sides of the car out of wood because I wasn't willing to fork out for new ones. Have a look at my thread in the projects section.

Doesn't look as bad as you might expect!

I've been shelling out for parts for my 79 vw bus with yank only fuel injected 2.0 type4 motor. Comparitively the 205 is cheap as chips still!

My saab 9000 is going the same way now many new parts are dissapearing, so been buying the odd essential spare for that recently before they go too daft.

I bought what red inserts I needed a while back but I'd get some made before I'd pay those prices.
