Phase 1 And 2 Gti Differences

Recommended Posts

MiniGibbo

Right as above, I know it's probably not going to be a quick five minute answer but in short what's the main differences..?

Mainly suspension wise/ wiring wise.

I know the dash, wing mirrors and rear lights differ.

Apart from that I'm lost. Thanks in advance :)

yes very different, the tachymetric relay is next to the battery on phase 1 and next to the ecu on phase 2 under the dash mind you most plugs are in the same place with exception of the inlet mounted coil and radiator fan switch amongst other things

Only the door hinge pins changed from knock in/out to screw in but you can still use knock in pins on the screw in type

All depends on your dash really as the loom differences and plugs are dramatically different from phase 1 to 2

Get ready for some head thrashing if your converting a phase 2 dash to fit phase 1 wiring lol

A sample of a very long day ....

Well if you have a look at my thread that wont be a problem as I don't have a dash haha..

I really like the idea of getting a phase 1 dash to be "proper" but if I have to ill fit a phase 2 dash (if it fits..?)

Mines a phase 1 cti and the entire phase 1.5/2 dash fits fine except for the hole under the triangle cover top centre, theres nothing behind it to screw into oh and the heater is different to phase 1 as well so you'll also need that. I have my phase 1 stuff in the loft so it doesn't get broken

Goddammit always remember something else as i post on here and have to edit.. steering column is also different from 1-1.5/2 as the plastic shroud bolts on in different places, also the stalks are different too (and the wiring plug for the wipers)!

I plan to run not a lot of the dash so I might be onto a winner from the offset then.. weird how they changed in such little but important ways haha

I think yours is a phase 1.5, spanner in works time :P

Saying that, if its bare it really doesnt matter what you have, but the dash and most wiring will be closer to phase 2 than 1.

Pretty sure it is a phase 1. It had the earlier hatch, wing mirrors, door trims (where they don't go the full height) and the earlier loom (it's even got the studs for the relay box on the passenger side chassis leg).

It's a bare shell, so whatever the doner is, just swap it all over :)

It was defo a late Phase 1 rather than an early Phase 1.5.

As Alan says, it's simple enough to fit Phase 1.5 / 2 stuff if you're doing the whole lot, the issue comes when you're trying to mix and match bits of varying ages.

Personally, given that it's around the changeover point, I would just fit Phase 1.5 dash etc back in and no one will be any the wiser, but will make getting hold of the parts that you need MUCH easier and cheaper - certain Phase 1 specific parts are getting quite scarce (and thus expensive) now.

I agree with Anthony. Getting phase 1 stuff is becoming a bit of a joke price wise. Thankfully my phase 1 is complete but i wouldn't want to start from scratch. I'm sure it's possible, just depends how much hassle you're prepared for. I'd go phase 1.5 as suggested. Good luck!
