Mot Advisory...

Recommended Posts

JamesE

As my car is getting painted I thought I'd start obtaining parts which were highlighted at the last MOT.

One of the things was 'front suspension arm has slight play in a ball joint'

I'm presuming this means a wishbone? If so, am I better off replacing a pair? Look to be about £90 on eBay

Could be the wishbone balljoint is dying, or could be that the hub where the balljoint pin is clamped is loose and/or ovalled.

Some cheap wishbones are pretty lousy quality wise with bushes and - more problemsome as they're not easily replaced - balljoints that last worryingly short amount of time. Historically, Motaquip were the ones to get, but they're no longer made as I understand and recently I've heard of rather too many recent Motaquip 'bones failing in a short space of time as well.

Sorry I'm a mechanical numpty - if it's ovaled does that mean a new hub?

Replacement or getting someone like Bridgecraft to machine and repair.

Probably a silly question but is there an easy way to check your hub? Is it just a case of measuring around? I'm about to press some need wheel bearings in so wouldn't mind checking my hub first!
