Driveshafts And The Spring Inside Inner Joint.

Recommended Posts

B1ack_Mi16

I can't remember which of the driveshafts that had the spring loaded inner joint.

I took both shafts apart for quite some time ago to do a proper refurb, and now I've forgot which has the spring :)

Can anyone enlighten me? (I would have thought both of them should have it though, but only one did).

Short side. I only know because I reco'd my shafts two days ago.

My experience is that only shafts which have the integral non-removeable outer CV have the spring in the inner joint. The type of shaft that uses a removeable outer joint that fits on a spline and is retained by a snap ring doesn't have the spring.

I've also been repairing shafts.

Ok, thanks guys :)

My shafts were both the same type when it comes to the design of the inner joint, so couldn't see any difference on that.

It's 1991 model ABS shafts I've got.

Then I can start assembly again, freshly sandblasted and painted, intermediate bearing and gaitors etc.

Will be nice :)

It is the style of OUTER joint the determines if the INNER joint has a spring in.

Ok, but both my outer joints are the same though, with splines and groove with lock ring on the shaft part.

So just knocked them off to dismantle.

Good old Peugeot! Who knows then! I've only ever found the spring in shafts with the 1 piece integral outer joint.

I've had loads of pug/citroen shafts with removable joints and a spring in the inner cup.

Well I can only comment from my experience, which has been consistant enough for my statement above.

As if you noticed that? How many is loads?

How many did you have without? What is the total ratio?

Bit OT but what cv gaitors are you using Tom?

I've had nothing but hassle from the ones I've tried

Whatever comes from the factors, although to qualify that statement I only use direct fit NON stretch boots, so nothing "universal" and not stretch type.

The best way to make them stay on is to use the proper metal clips and a proper banding tool, far superior to cable ties.

Ok thanks for that.

I fitted first line ones and they lasted a total of 300 miles

Won't be buying those again.

Out of 4, 3 split and threw cv grease everywhere

Was a bit dubious of them when I was fitting then, did not feel the best of quality

I have found Corteco and GKN to be very good, Glaser is the o.e generally IIRC but I haven't seen any suppliers.

Actually assembled the long shaft today (the shorter still needs paint) and noticed that the inner joint on the long axle did not have machining for the spring to seat anyway, so wouldn't have been possible to put it wrong :)
