Swapping A Tu.

As above really, one out and another in.. Never done it before.

 

Advice, tips and hints..?

Drop youre engine oil ( saves making a mess) drop the gearbox oil too before you take the shafts out , Label all youre loom with sensors etc writen on masking tape makes life easier if you havmt done it before when in comes to putting it together

Drive shafts out , gear linkages , water pipes, fuel pipes , exhaust, throttle cable, battery out , lower engine mount ( makes sure the cranes on before u do the gearbox mount) top left engine mount , anything else conecting the engine to the car

 

I normaly take them out through the top to be fair but some will drop the subframe and drop them from the bottom

If youre taking it out from the top make sure you have someone guiding the engine so you dont scratch youre engine bay , and id remove the battery tray/gearbox mounting point 4 13mm bolts and will give you a slight bit moreroom / clearnace

 

Im sure im probs missed something but thats a breif outline of it , simple enough to do mate u will work it out sure others will have some other tips and advice , good luck! Take youre time with it worst thing to do is rush

Undo the bonnet stay at the top (bonnet side), and you can actually use the holes at the bottom of the bonnet to get the bonnet open 'wider' so to speak. Handy if you are bringing the engine out through the top. Just use a rag or something on the end of the stay as if you're too violent with this method you could dint your bonnet.

I'm currently debating taking the front end off to have it out that way but I don't know if that'll be a can of worms..

put some carpets over the wings, nothing worse than a loom/cable end falling over the side and whacking them and creating an eyesore of a dent

fairly sure the top engine mount / arm can differ with TU engines.

Taking the front end and rad etc off will help but i would get some new bumber fixing 'T' shaped bolts as they tend to snap but you could be lucky and make sure you push against the other end of the 'T' shaped bolts on the bumper when you undo or they may spin and scratch the upper bumper (i know from experience lol)

 

Diffrent upper engine mount arangements on the base models : youres will be the same as the white one i would have thought the red one is a very early model mid to late 80's iirc

If you've got an engine crane, a TU engine is a doddle as it's so small and compact compared to a XU/XUD (especially 16v!)

 

Don't bother removing the bumper etc as that's just creating work for yourself and liable to end up with a load of broken fixings, as mentioned above.

 

Remove the radiator and cowling - easy to do, gives a chunk more space, and means that you won't accidentally damage it.

 

Personally, removing the engine and gearbox as a single item out of the top is the way I do it - you'll need to tilt it a little to do that, and remove the battery tray (lower the gearbox a little to get space to access the two M8 bolts under the tray)

 

If it's your first engine swap (or atleast, first of this type) then take lots of pictures and label things up as you remove them - makes refitting much simpler as you've something to refer back to when you're scratching your head when you're refitting the new engine days/weeks later and can't remember where a given wire or pipe goes to (especially as yours is non-standard to begin with)

 

With the engine out, take the opportunity to have a good poke around the engine bay and sort out any rust or other issues that are hard to do with the engine in place - the corner of the bulkhead underneath the brake servo/MC is a prime example.

Ahh my old cars!

 

The red one was a late '88, one of the first XS's to get a TU.

 

The white was a '90.

Thanks guys I've taken note of all the above and will keep it in mind.. I "should" have everything I need but we always think that haha

 

The bay will be gone over with a fine toothed comb.

 

Do I need to do anything with the clutch cable or just unclip, re clip..?

Put two separate slings for each engine lifting eye, make the gearbox end slightly longer so the gearbox side drops lower and cambelt end lifts first.

 

Put a jack under the gearbox to ease that end down

 

Remove exhaust downpipe, it can be done with it on but it's loads easier without.

 

Alternator gets in the way aswell if your worried about paint but also not essential.
