Help Needed - Easy One For Someone

Recommended Posts

Forum gurus,

My washer squirt has given up the ghost. The wipers work, the rear wiper works and the rear washer works. I've tried a replacing the stalk, but same story. I'm therefore guessing the stalk is ok.

I wired a live and earth to the washer motor and it squirts, so clearly there is a break in the live between the stalk and washer motor or on the earth after it. I therefore want to wire in a new live wire directly from the battery to the stalk. Question is, what pin does it go to? There appears to be one 5 pin brown connector and one green 3 pin connector, which one please?

Also if I wire an earth from the negative of the washer motor to the car body, presumably this will work in combination with the live feed?

Thanks in advance

dont fanny about with all that wiring! Have you tried simply cleaning/replacing the earth? usually the problem.

Hi allye, I ran an earth from the washer motor to the the strut mount, but the wash on the stalk still didn't work. I am guessing it is a break in the live. Can anyone help? I'm looking to do this before it gets dark!

Thanks

Do you have a multi meter? That would tell you straight away!

I've got access to one if needed, but I wouldn't have a clue how to use it!

Did you replace it with a new stalk or a second hand jobbie? Sometimes where the switches are a bit worn out you have to pull the switch slightly upwards as well as towards you to get it to squirt. I have to do this on 2 of my 205's.

I had this annoying problem once, i powered it direct from the battery with the plug still on the motor and it whizzed and its worked properly ever since so no idea what caused it i presumed it was an earth issue but connecting up a temporary earth made no difference and the wipers always cycled so i know it couldn't have been the stalk

I have this issue as well, but haven't got round to it as of yet.

I was told about the switch, and checked the supply to the motor. It read about 7v iirc.

Is it a common issue on these, as it seems not to be run through a relay, and just direct off the stalk.

Any ideas?

Well, here is what I found:

1) I found out how to use a multimeter using this web guide:

https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-use-a-multimeter/measuring-voltage

2) I then took off the 3-pin green and 7-pin brown multiplug from the wiper stalk and tested each pin independantly for voltage. From this, there were 3 pins identified as having permanent live feed (as described below).

3) I then took a piece of wire and bridged between the permanent live pin and each other pin independently. Pin 1 and Pin 2 on the brown multiplug got me at first, as on my original wiper stalk, there were pin connections for these, but on the replacement wiper stalk there were no pin connections. I turns out these two pins are not needed. Here are the results (I've tried to identify the individual wire number, but please treat this with caution, because the printed numbers on the wires were hard to read/dirty/partially faded. Also treat the colouring with caution, some wires that were white appeared to be very faded lilac):

Green Multiplug

Pin 1 - White wire (No. 33M) - Permanent Live Feed

Pin 2 - Yellow wire (No. 87M) - Rear Washer Motor

Pin 3 - Orange wire (No. 28R) - Rear Wiper

Brown Multiplug:

Pin 1 - Yellow wire (No. 102) - Not used, no apparent function. No connection pin in some wiper stalks.

Pin 2 - White wire (No. ?) - Permanent Live Feed (in my car). Not used, no apparent function. No connection pin in some wiper stalks.

Pin 3 - Grey wire (No. B1) - Front Wiper (Fast Speed)

Pin 4 - Orange wire (No. 28) - Front Wiper (Intermediate Speed)

Pin 5 - Brown wire (No. ?) - No apparent function.

Pin 6 - White wire (No. 33A) - Permanent Live Feed.

Pin 7 - White wire (No. 87) - Front Washer Motor

Having done that, it became apparent that the frint washer motor wasn't coming on when a live feed was applied directly to the Pin 7. I assumed this was either a break in the earth wire that lead from the washer pump (-ive side) to the earth point on the chassis, or a break in the live feed from Pin 7 to the washer pump (+ive terminal). I ran a new earth from the washer pump to the chassis to check the earth, but still the wiper stalk didn't operate the washer motor. I therefore ran a new wire from Pin 7, through the bulkhead and to the washer motor (+ive terminal), and hew presto, the washer now works!

Only thing is, it doesn't squirt properly. Just a tiny bit, like a mouse pi55ing! I'm hoping its a blocked tube!
