Dimmer Switch Bypass

Recommended Posts

Shakey_Jake

Hello!

Currently trying to get the 205 through an MOT and the last thing to tick off the list is the dash lights and side light icon, whilst tracing the wires and doing some searching on here I found that my car has a dimmer switch so I guess this is stopping my dash from illuminating and possibly side light icon too.

So, as I don't have a dimmer switch how do I bypass it? I've tried testing and bridging which didn't do a lot but made me run out of spare fuses. (I'm not very good at electrics)

Here's what I've got

Thanks in advance,

Jake

bridging should bring the backlighting on at full brightness, so if the fuses are blowing you obviously have a short! even at max dimness they should still be visible in darkness.

not sure which plug that one is but the dimmer has a similar plug but only two wires.

it does not bring on the sidelight icon however if the sidelight fuse blows then it wont come on ;)

might have a dimmer I could sell you, not been to the p.o yet :P

Oh, tried that plug before and it didn't do anything but just changed the fuse and bridged it again so it works now CHEERS!

Got a full dash of lights now, looks nice!

Just need to tidy my wiring now, lots of loose ends.

Cheers Welshpug!

If anybody wants to swap a dimmer for a gen-u-wine original Peugeot bridge, as fitted to pikey-spec cars, I'd be happy to oblige. I hate over-bright dash lights.

i had one of these on my old g reg. it always got knocked or moved so i took it out, then i lost the rev counter for some reason. had to put the dimmer back to get everything working again.

If I just cut out the one on mine and join the 2 wires that are left I assume this will just leave them on full brightness permanently?

I'm just trying to tidy my Dash up a little, the dimmer is currently held on with a cable tie! (stripped interior)

Or get a "blanking plate" out of a base model which basically eliminates the dimmer and keeps the lights on bright permanently

so the dimmer swith fits one of the brown plugs? i have the same issue and thought it was down to the conversion, and have noticed my dimmer swithc on the floor not plugged in. and that will be why the dash lights are not working.

Correct, the dimmer switch completed the circuit for the dash lights to work

Can I just repeat my offer for a straight swap...? I have a blanking plate here waiting to be swapped for a dimmer.

Yep, it just fits into a three-way brown plug dangling down to the underside of the steering cowl. And if you forget to plug it in, nothing happens at all with the dash lights.

Indeed, the link in post 4 shows the brown plug with the two green wires that goes to the dimmer switch. Chop the wires and join them and you get a lovely glow from the dash :)
