Old Skool Swede

I know this is a pug forum, but I thought I'd post of (not great quality) picture of my latest acquisition. I have weak spot for Volvo and I've just picked up this great conditioned 240 GLT manual. It's an old skool arm chair which I'm going to use as a daily driver for a while. I thought this would make a great sleeper car as it's rwd, looks like something your dad drive 25 years ago and is screaming to have a T5 dropped into it :D

The photo isn't great, I just took it with my phone when I got it home.

In current form it's a 2.3 manual with a 0-60 of about a week and returning about 25mpg. The dilemma is whether it's too good and original to start modifying. I always promise myself to leave my cars standard, but I love the idea of rapid sleeper Volvo.

What do you guys think - love these old bricks or hate them?

it's screaming out for a T5, huge turbo and a hefty lowering if you ask me :D

Definitely needs lowering off the stilts. The handling is hilarious, but it is strangely loads of fun to drive particularly up the approx 1km track up to my house which a few 90 bends.

Its awesome but not as awesome as an estate. T5 wont be that easy but an earlier turbo 4 will be.

T6 ;)

Nah, always preferred the saloon. Most folks on the brick scene prefer estates.

The most common conversion is the turbo unit from a 740. The t5 will go but does require a bit of fabrication work for engine mounts and other challenges. T6, now there's an idea!

That looks very tidy, like the idea of a sleeper... Keep it looking standard but with firmed up suspension to cope with the corners!

Have you seen the Bjorn Busby video? Old Volvo with some serious lag then basically goes into warp speed when the 6 cylinder turbo kicks in!

I've always liked the 240s but find they look better in photos as when your next to one you can't take it all in they're fookin gigantic!

Yours looks seriously tidy Matt, get more pictures up :)

I drove a 240 estate once. 4spd with a switch on the dash for "fifth gear" (not an overdrive, oh no...) - we were considering swapping the Saab 900 we'd blagged for the Plymouth-Dakar for it. Let's just say that we took the Saab instead, despite the massive unsuitability for the route. I did not like the 240 one bit.

Although I have been thinking "Hmmm..." whenever I've seen 'em lately...

Amazons and PVs, though - oh, yes, very please. If you want '80s Swede, 900 is the only way to go. I loved my T16.

(Or, if you want daft Volvo, there's the 1.4 340 variomatic that a mate has - alongside his Allegro...)

I do like these old Volvo's, a couple of chaps from a local car 'gang' in Torbay have them, SOS Low & Lazy. They are slammed and with a slight rat look. One is getting a turbo'd motor at the moment too. :)

I'm well informed the overdrive box is not a pleasant experience. Mine is a full on 'high-tech' 5 speed manual. Really like the 900s but I felt the urge for some RWD fun.

It wasn't the worst bit of the car... More of a symptom.

but I felt the urge for some RWD fun.

Mmm. Have to admit, I found very little to be fun in the 240, except for getting back out of it.
