Original Gti Options When New

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

This may have been coveted in the past, but I can't remember it if it was.

Back in the day when one could order a GTi new, what was on the option list?

The sunroof was the obvious one, but was air con or abs available or via special editions only?

AC and ABS were certainly options on later cars, and central locking and electric windows were options on 1.6's (1.9's had them as standard)

I thought central locking was standard fit on the 1.6's? Happy to be corrected if i'm wrong?

Standard on later (Phase 2) 1.6's but optional on earlier ones AFAIK - certainly I've had 1988 and 1989 1.6's without for example

Thanks Anthony, so my '88 1.6 with sunroof, central locking and electric windows was at the time, 'fully loaded'!

I only say that as I don't think I've ever come across a 1.6 that didn't have it.

Wasn't remote central locking an option, over standard central locking?

I believe so, as my 1989 1.9 had key only operated central locking from drivers door only.

options and standard equipment varied year on year.

Possibly an option on later non-GTi's (some of which kept the older non-RCL setup), but on GTi models, RCL replacing non-RCL was a change that happened as part of the Phase 2 update. Look up at the roof console on Phase 2 GTi's and you'll see the tale-tale black dome that the IR receiver is located behind.

AFAIK RCL was never an option on earlier cars, only regular central locking (which was standard on 1.9's)

I assume heated seats and headlight washers were only options for cold countries?

Heated mirrors were fitted to some models (Gentry?) but I don't know if they were available as an option on the GTI.

Evening,

I have an original 1988/89 brochure and the options on the 1.6 gti and 1.9 gti for phase 1.5 are as follows:

1.6

Central locking of doors and tailgate - Combined option at extra cost

Electric front windows - Combined option at extra cost

Metallic/black paint

Sunroof

1.9

Metallic/black paint

Sunroof

Therefore, the central locking/electric windows were part of the combined option on the 1.6. Also, if you have metallic/black paint as well, then yes it is fully loaded as far as the manufacturing options are concerned.

My 91 J plate phase 2 1.6 didn't have EW or CL. It was one of the early ones with the separate door looms as I retro fitted it and electric windows.

Then there were all the accessories like headlight protectors, reflective rear panels, mudflaps, mats, dog guards, boot liners, pin stripes, full side PTS decals, lion soft toy.... etc.

I think sunroofs were delete options at the end of the 205 GTIs life - mine is one of these hence rarer in later form, as you didn't have to pay for the roof so most had them.

On earlier cars these were options I understand but happy to be corrected.

My 1989 1.9 has central locking but is only operational from the drivers side. If I unlock from the pass side, only that door unlocks - not the boot and the other like when I do it from the drivers side. I thought there was a fault somewhere - not realising that it was supposed to be like that

Wait, black paint was a cost option?

Weird.
