Master Cylinder What Pipe Goes Where

Recommended Posts

shooter mcgavin

Started running the new copper lines on my project today but in my haste at stripping it all down a few months back I failed to pay attention to what pipe supplied what corner from the master cylinder. It's a rear disc set up

Can someone help me out please

Each pipe goes to each corner looking down onto it so the ones on the end are for the front and the ones at the back are for the rear

And sided, that's that's what I thought but always best to check

From servicebox (if you haven't sorted an account yet, why not?!)

usefully lists most lengths for hard line and flexi's, clips are listed separately.

  • RHD non abs 1.9 gti, uses twin inline brake pressure limiters mounted near fuel tank.

  • 1.6 gti type braking system, as used by Euro rallye, engine bay mounted brake pressure limiter.

  • Base model type braking system, brake pressure limiters integrated into rear wheel cylinders.

"RHD non abs 1.9 gti, uses twin inline brake pressure limiters mounted near fuel tank."

I don't have have these, are they needed?

The car was originally a 1.6 to which I'm adding a 309 beam

I really need to get set up with service box, I take it it's quite straight forward.

Is it just me or in the 1st pic should the straight line to the rear not be on the drivers side as the one with lots of bends that follows the fuel lines on mine is in the passenger side. Not a big deal but just wondered why its different.

Re read the third line of your post, stop, think about it, then look at the three diagrams again.

Stop being so blunt ! The guy is asking for help. Something straight forward to you may not be to others !

I would actually love to know the answer to the above as my 1.6 is getting gti6 up front and 205/306 rear calliper and not sure if I can just run all 4 lines direct or if I need compensators/limiters

I have a 1.6 with discs at rear and gti-6 fronts, I don't run limiters and have had no problems yet, will lock fronts but have not managed to lock rears yet.

Thanks glenwah that's what I think most foke do and that's what I plan, I don't recall ever fitting inline pressure limiters before.

Welsh pug I've re-read and I still think I've missed your point,

Building this car is my hobby thst love spending time on to get away from " real life" and when I can't work things out for my self I ask for help on here as I'm sure it's what this place was intended for, if I find an easier or better way of doing a job I'll gladly share my knowledge on here but for know its just questions, trivial sometimes but all help is greatly appreciated.

you have a 1.6 setup so you should have the rear brake limiter in the engine bay on the passenger side, its a big fat valve with a ball bearing in it, instead of the 1.9 limiters near the tank. The brake pipe should go into the back of it and the front outlet then piped to the rear brake splitter

The std 1.6 line set up is fine, I'd run a adjustable valve personally to the rear, Pointless adding 2 lines to the rear

Sorry slo I've not been very clear.

I've removed all the the brake piping and the 1.6 limiter, I've also swapped the 3 port mc for a 1.9 4 port .

Had I have known at the start that the 1.6 set up works just as we'll with rear discs I'd just have left it as it was,

Do you still have the 1.6 components? Easy to put them back, well as long as you haven't destroyed anything removing them, your already using new piping are you laying it all out as original? Master cylinder is easy to block off 1 port nearest to the servo for the rear brakes

So far I've done 1 side. I don't think I still have the 1.6 limiter :-(

I did this too, with this bolt:

Running at the moment a 1.6 setup (1 line to the rear and a 1.6 limiter) with a 309 beam with discs, 306 GTi-6 brakes at the front and a 406 mastercylinder. It works fine.

maybe an option to buy a new 1.6 limiter instead of 2 new 1.9 limiters?

they have been nla/nfp for some time, however 1.9 and 309 are still available, they have different pressures, zx 16v uses same type also, higher pressure again (50% more than 205!!)

So no matter what road I take I'm going to have to fit either 1x 1.6 or 2 x 1.9 limiters :-(

or an adjustable aftermarket one, like they use in motorsport.

I bought the bolt at a local carpartsbusiness

If you've fitted a new master cylinder they are usually supplied with a couple in the box, if you don't have them afaik any motor factors should be able to source you one.
