2.0 8V Turbo, Oil All Over Turbo

Recommended Posts

just took my turbo out after finally swapping the engine over, It ran fine with no problems in the old shell. But noticed the turbo is covered in oil after a short run, but when its off and stopped its not leaking any oil at all.

any ideas on were to start with this?

cheers

Either a leaking oil pipe union or the turbo seal needs replacing (and possibly bearings), it's like a small piston ring. Does it smoke at all?

its a brand new turbo, and no smoke even after its been stood, and no drips of oil underneath. that's why i couldn't understand it. and was running fine before it was swapped over.

Clean it all down, start it up, let it idle and just watch it, see if you can see where it's coming from.

When you say the turbo is covered in oil do you mean the outside of it or the internal fan etc? Is it an original gerrett t25?

its a hybrid think its a gt28 something. Its oil sprayed over the outside on the exhaust side mainly over/around the top were the boost pipe goes into it. from what i can see.

Any chance of a pic? apart from the oil pipe joins leaking its a bit hard to diagnose, whats your rocker cover gasket like?

wont be able to get a decent pic untill tomorrow now, rocker cover is new and dry. its like its been spraying out of a boost hose, if it was that what would cause them to fill with oil?

The boost hose could have a split around the jubilee clip from over tightening it or it could be a tad not tight enough. The turbo will consume some of its own oil over time due to the nature of the pressures involved but nothing drastic, slight drop on the dipstick over 6 months is nothing to worry about but if it seems to be pumping a lot through the turbo somethings not right have you cleaned out the oil baffle mesh in the oil filler? (Presuming your engine is all standard apart from the turbo)

Could be that the engine is worn (piston rings) to a point where the new turbo is pumping more pressure than the rings can handle but it seems odd that its not dripping onto the floor when stood. How fast is the oil level dropping on the dipstick?

Ill check the clips and pipe tomorrow, its not pumping oil out, just a visable film over that area. not enough to be a leak as no drips or puddles anywhere. not cleaned ot the mesh no, will give that a try. engine is all standard. oil level never really dropped before or after swapped it from the other car.

cheers

turns out the pipe was split, new one is NFP, so ordered a silicon one hope it works. seams to be quite oily in all the boost pipes though.
