Poor Running And Will Not Idle

Recommended Posts

205trials

Hi,

Completed my first engine swap and everything went ok including the fitting of power steering to my F Reg 1.9GTi.

The problem I have since the new engine went in is that it will not idle below 2500rpm, it just dies. I have checked everything for leaks and ensured everything is sealed. I have tested the AFM with a multimeter and get a sweeping change in impedance across he range of the swing.

Can anyone suggest anything that I may be missing, I was thinking it may be the throttle sensor, can this be tested?

Any ideas would be great.

Lee

Air leak?

Bolt that holds the oil filler in place - is it there? If not you'll have a huge leak of unmetered air.

Im trying to overcome a similar (but quite possibly a different) problem on overhauling my 1991 205 1.6.

I have recently paid 2 mechanics to work on my car, and I still find myself on here looking for answers instead of enjoying the 205 so I have decided drastic actions call for my hands like bulls feet, approach!

The 1st was to work on trying to get the car running right as I have always had a problem with ignition and air / fuel mix / high revving range, and bad idle, or so I thought til I had taken it to him,

after leaving the car with the 1st mechanic, he advised me that the car needed a new engine, and he just so happened to have a str8 diesel from a 306 that would drop straight in, so I quickly removed the car from him, took it for a second look, and got the car back up and running via the 2nd opinion, but he advised that the HC on the emmissions were very high and would not pass a vehicle MOT.

I am having problems upon idle, startup, tickover, and the car almost feels as if it is off cylinder, admittedly the Max Power Air filter did not come standard so I have a high air - fuel mix, but my problem is, that the car on a cold start will start for 40 seconds or so, and upon engine reaching temperature then the idle starts to run from approx. 700 - 3500 revs. (I have to say approx as the rev counter ain't working either.)

I am unsure to start off with the Air flow meter, or look for the SAD device on my car, if their is one.. any recommendations??

thx

Thanks for the suggestions, will check the oil filler bolt and try a different ECU.

Weetel, sorry I can be of any help to you, Air Flow Meter or Throttle Sensor would be worth checking. Can you find somebody who can led you one?

I havd issues with my own, still have in fact.

What i found brilliant, as one of the guys suggested on here before was i got a copy of the Workshop manual, not the service and repair manual.

It goes through the entire setup and i was really surprised by how different it was to the service manual.

I am using the 1.6 manual but have the 1.9 on order for myself.

My issues are more related to difficult starting, and have pinned it down to the tachymetric relay. It is switching but the contacts themselves are almost gone.

One thing the manual did say was air leaks after the AFM should not be there.

Thanks for the advice Mike.

I had the Tachymetric relay bypassed and Crash Switch added,. this will cut off the fuel in the event of a crash/roll and has the advantage of bypassing the dodgy French relay.... ;) My local Pug specialist did the job for me for £50.

I have a few spare relays if you need one.

Cheers mate, might take you up on that in the near future <_<

I generally use mine currently as a form of security, pull the relay when parked up for awhile
