There's a group of us going on the Retro Run, on the 31st July, spending a week there camping. There's a thread on here if you want to take a look, Brands Hatch 2 Nurburgring Retro Run 2013 or similar!

If your going around that time July 26th, then you might as well plan and go to see the Eifel rally festival in a town called Daun. It's only 20 km away from the Ring and is on from 25-27th July. All the cars are in the centre of the town, in 2 car parks and its free to have a wonder round and go out to the stages. There are already over 200 entries and reserves this year and the cars range from Lancia's, Audi's, Peugeots, lots of Opel's and Group A and B cars. It's not a rally, but a demonstration and has a nice atmosphere about it.

Fuel wise out in Germany you can get 100 octane good quality fuel in Aral petrol stations. They are blue and white, but owned by BP.

I usually take an entire spare management system (inc. alternator etc), as well as a decent compliment of tools, axle stand, jack and fluids. Be prepared for all eventualities, as on various 'Ring trips over the years, I've seen all sorts of 205 breakdowns. Oh, and cable ties in different sizes from small to big ones. You'd be surprised what they can be used to bodge to get you back to Blighty!

Oh, and a credit card with spare credit. You'll need it if you smack armco (and some bumhole cream for afters) ;)

Where are you staying?

I trailer my car there and back, but also take a selection of spares. Should go without saying that you need to go through everything beforehand to make sure it is all in A1 condition. It is a long way back home so personally I would take things such as driveshafts and wheel bearings, you may not be able to replace a wheel bearing outside the digs, but one of the local garage firms can, but getting hold of one in a rush in Adenau would not be so easy, but if you have one with you job is a good un. Brake pads, if yours are 50% worn fit new, and take the worn ones as spares.

Take a few normal spares. Oil, plugs, zip ties, tool kit, jack, hammer, breaker bar.

Also - and most importantly - your ADAC membership.

Re the ADAC - unless things have chanegd teh ADAC where the ones that woudl tow you off the Ring and you woudl get charged a hefty fee if you aren't a memeber. Free if you are.

And you don't have to crash to need a tow - any sort of breakdown will see you on a back of a lorry as they don't let you get towed off.

Been for the last 13 years, a truly great experience, however, if you've not been before for gods sake take it easy, there's a few places where the corners tighten mid corner and catch many out, if you make a mistake and damage the barrier you could be into thousands plus the damage to your car and the inconvenience.

The only place in the world you'll be looking in your mirror more than out of the window, and get out of the way of anything that's coming up, doesn't matter if your in a Ferrari, a local lad in his stripped out golf will go by you so don't be fooled and think you can race.

It's an awesome place but its future is uncertain so make the most of your trip and enjoy it.

Regarding ADAC cover, it's Bonguards that will tow you off now, but if you're an ADAC member then I believe they bill ADAC direct for the recovery (covered by most of the Euro policies, but check your cover level). If it's a breakdown, then I think you're covered for recovery but there may still be fees if they have to close to clean up or cordon off the area to recover you. If you crash into the Armco, then you'll need to ensure you've got a way of paying for repairs. I always take a credit card with a £5k limit with me, just in case me or a mate really gets stuck out there.

When it comes to breaking down if the worst happens. Older cars can be problematic when trying to get towed home. If you've got agreed value insurance it can help, but a lot of recovery firms won't bring older cars back to the UK if they deem the cost of repatriation to exceed the value of the vehicle. Had a few of the guys that come on our 'ring run have difficulties with that. Trying to argue the point over a mobile whilst you're on the side of the road can be a PITA, so be prepared for it first.

Those Euro-HIC health card thing is essential too, whether it's a crash or an illness or whatever else.
