205 2.6 Turn Rack?

Evening chaps,

 

I'm looking into changing the rack on my 309 for a higher ratio item. I've read the usual stuff about the Xsara VTS rack.

 

There is a P reg 205 local to me which is being broken for parts. Somehow, its steering is 2.6ish turns, lock to lock. Every knowledgeable 205 person I ask tells me that there was no such rack fitted to a 205 from the factory. The car is a bog standard 205 diesel with PAS. Hasn't been messed about with (1 farmer (yes, farmer, not former!) owner from new, IIRC), so I believe it to be a factory rack.

 

One person has mentioned the possibility of a lock stop due to being a diesel, but I'm not sure if any 205's had lock stops. I've had the wheels straight ahead and counted turns to each lock and it is equal. I can't say if the rod ends have been adjusted to dial the lock stop out by an un-knowing mechanic though.

 

What do you lot think?

I was kinda coming round to just buying a Xsara rack, partly because my steering is a little lifeless at the dead ahead position. I was wondering if the PAS pump on the XU10 may be running a higher pressure than my original rack. Fitting a Xsara rack would match pump to rack. Opinions please? I've spent months thinking what to do!
