Valves Not Shutting Fully?

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

ive put the cams (xu7 ones) back in today and gave each cam a few revolutions to settle things but have found two valves are not shutting properly ?

1 exhaust and 1 inlet

is this just a case of the valve getting stuck in the guide? i did oil them liberally before fitting. should they settle in after some more turning or do i need to remove the cams to investigate?

Is this a serious question? If they do not shut against spring pressure then yes there is definitely a problem.

yeah im afraid it is tom  youll have to forgive my retardedness but this is my first real attempt at rebuilding a head so am a little dubious.

it seems i may have answered my own question as ive rotated them a few more times and the are all now closing fully.

have you confirmed they are straight? they are original to the head right?

yup, after all the f*cking about with seals and whatnot i decided to fit all the original parts back on. and yes the valves all moved freely when fitted in the shafts. and as far as i know they are straight. (well they were fine before i removed them)

That's some rather pink paint going on there.

Might be the lifters still have pressure in them. We had the same problem when rebuilding a mates engine. They settled down after a few rotations and dropped back to normal

I just re-read what you posted, didn't realise you were fitting the cams, 4 valves will be open with the cams in and pinned, though should be the same amount for each pair! as Paul said, probably the lifters not settled.

as Paul said, if you refilled the lifters make sure they are fully compressed, ie depressed pistons before fitting. otherwise you will get open valves

as Paul said, if you refilled the lifters make sure they are fully compressed, ie depressed pistons before fitting. otherwise you will get open valves, that said I can see that two valves on the inlet side of the same cylinder are open a different amount, both inlets should be open the same amount.. so i think Paul is right

I did notice some if the inlets were at different heights when opened.

So this should sort itself out after a few more rotations or should I remove the lifters and compress them?

What if I didn't fill all the lifters properly before fitting them, will that me a massive problem or will it right itself.

overfill is worse, under fill will sort itself

mine all looked closed, but we had no compression when cranking, I suggest you compress them fully, but not drain them.

Quick question did you re cut the valves in?

I know it got nothing to do with them staying open of course but if its your 1st building a head just trying to help!

Just use a g clamp to push the piston back as far as it will go then refit?

i would say, disasemble, depress the ball valve to bottom them out, then refit.

If you use the gclamp - make sure you protect the surfaces of the lifter from marks, as they should be well finished.

Just had the inlet off, a few of the followers were nigh on rock solid, depressed them using a clamp and a socket to protect the end.

Got a couple of drops of oil out and some air refitted and they are all level with each other.

Just got to do the exhaust now.
