Wrong Seals ? What Ones Then?

sorry to start another thread but this is giving me the proper bollock ache now.

 

my gti6 stem seals turned up today and guess what they dont fit the xu7 stems, and ive damaged a couple trying so cant return them either.

 

after doing some measuring, the xu10 seals are about 8mm internal and the xu7 ones are about 9mm internal so im really scratching my head.

 

im really struggling to sort this issue out and the only real solution i can think of is using the xu7 seals as they seem to fit the double springs well:

to add insult to injury they are three time the price of the xu10rs ones :wacko:

If that's the XU7 retainer, that's quite obviously not sitting correctly.

 

You need to get the top of the valve guides machined down to suit, or find a single spring stiff enough to work those retainers and gti6 cams, possibly 10J4R ones?

 

I did ask if you had checked this, and Sandy did say that only some early ones were compatible without machining work!

yeah i know its a an xu7 retainer, just wondered why this wouldnt work? the spring sits nicely on the lip. or even just use the large spring as the small spring is weak and rubbish anyway.

 

i did check but with the measuring equipment ive got i didnt measure good enough.

 

tbh ive had enough of it now mate and im thinking of throwing in the towel its just one thing after another.

XU10J4R springs are quite close to coil binding with RS cams as I understand, so possibly not a good choice.

 

There's a few different XU7 and J4R heads and hence they can be a bit of a headache, with subtle differences internally - I stripped three and all three had differing parts from memory (one had 7mm stems, others 6mm, three different valve springs etc). I didn't get around to fitting them, but RS stem seals did look like they'd fit the one I was building (an early 6mm stem J4R head) and the measurements tallied up.

What about running a single rs spring? What does the smaller spring do anyway?

 

I'm not having the guides machined that's for sure so I guess I'll just have to run the xu7 cams then.

 

Poxy waste of my time....

I don't know if an RS outer alone has enough spring pressure to control the valve at high revs. It might do, but I've certainly not tried it.

 

You might be able to use the non-RS springs, but you'll need to check you've adequate coil clearance at full lift. There are people who have used RS cams in otherwise standard XU7/J4R heads with no obvious ill effects, but it's something you really should check IMO.

You mean rs cams and xu7 springs etc?

 

I'm struggling to see what help the small spring is but I guess it must be there for a reason?

 

Might take both large springs to work and check the pressures to compare.

just get the top of the guides machined, thats all that is needed to be able to use standard rs bits.

Ill ask about the cost of having them removed and machined by the bloke who skimmed the head and see .

Oh yes of course :lol: sandy has used the xu7 as a base for many a race engine, i'd imagine he has the technique dialled in by now, or at least works with a man that can
