Thinking Of Coverting 1.4 Spi To Solex Twin Choke

Recommended Posts

Last year I bought a 1993 CJ 1.4i from Ebay (bad decision).

When I got it home I discovered a few problems, difficult to start from cold, very high tickover even when hot.

I took the car to a local independent Citroen Peugeot dealer. He identified that someone had fitted an AX GT carb engine, but had retained the single point injection. As the engine did not have the proper sensers fitted to it, it could never run correctly. By using bits from other engines he managed to get the sensers connected. He said he had got the car to run as best as he could, but that the throttle body needed replacing if it was to run properly. As these seem to be rare and very expensive he suggested I should live with it.

Although the car runs very well it still ticks over higher than I would like and it seems to use quite a lot of petrol.

I have now acquired a Solex twin choke carb, with manifold and air filter assembly so I am thinking of converted the engine back to a carb.

I know I will need to disconnect the electric fuel pump, block off the return fuel pipe and fit a manual choke. Do I need anything else, I have seem a reference to a swirl pot or something like this fitted between the fuel pump and the carb, do I need one of these.?

What do you think, is it worth fitting the carb or should I stick to the single point fuel injection.

You shouldnt need to block off the return line the small swirl pot basically has 1 in let from the mechanical fuel pump off the back right hand side of the head (middle one) , one outlet to the carb inlet (bottom one) and another out let is the return to the tank (top one)

Im not sure on the fuel pump/tank tho because it will have a high pressure pump to run injection but will need a low pressure electonic pump (around 6psi) or the mechanical standard one for a carb im pritty sure you can buy low pressure in tank pumps tho im sure someone on here would be able to point you in the right direction tho

Thanks for the reply. The engine already has a mechanical pump fitted to it, it's just not connected to anything. What is the purpose of the swirl pot, and do I really need one.

No problem , Im not 100% certain but id say probly something todo with fuel surge and the facility for returning fuel to the tank that isnt needed at that present time ,

it will run without one yes not 100% it would be spot on tho id use one personaly

always try it and see what happends

Also Does the car have a distributor or is the ignition electronically controled by an ECU?
