I'm thinking of going to the dark side, does anyone know about E Class Merc's, the 212 series in particular.

Many thanks

Well congratulations Harryskid on a really helpful reply there. An old saying, "If you've nothing useful to say, say nothing".

I work in the commercial side of Mercedes but we obviously repair company vehicles and the vans share engines, for that shape E class i've not had to do anything other than servicing the most I've seen on the clock on one has been around 37k though (they get replaced regularly), but the old shape one we had had a front wheel bearing start vibrating around 90k other than that no issues, theres a CLS320 owned by the boss which has 190k on it and thats been faultless, 320 (sorry they call it 350 now I think either way its actually a 3 litre engine) V6 (642 or 652 engine code) diesel would be my choice really good engine obviously its a trade off for economy but certainly one of the best engines Mercedes has, there's nothing wrong with the 4-pot 651 engine either though!

there a nice car to drive quick, comfortable, inbuilt sat-nav is rubbish though!

the 350 is the V6 3 litre then OM642 or OM652 engine code the 652 being the newer engine doesn't matter which one you get, both really good engines used in a lot of ambulance sprinters and there faultless in them we very rarely have a V6 playing up, usually clocking 200k or more, servicing is around 19k, very torquey really pull well in all gears, auto is a no-brainer 7G-tronic box is fantastic obviously if your using the wheel paddles in manual mode it won't change down to redline but its more responsive thanks to the extra gears than the previous 5 speed auto and at around 70-80 your basically at idle in 7th gear, lots of toys obviously so read the manual so you can use / find them :)

my experience with merc's is they are good until they go wrong and then they are stupidly complicated to fix

i did a clutch on an a class it took 2 days and had to drop the whole front end subframe and engine out

stay away from manual boxs had alot of agro with one of those and they like to do airflow meters that unless you buy genuine will keep playing up

imo stay away unless you have deep pockets or tend to be rather lucky

not had the displeasure of working on a a-class but I can imagine being fwd they would suck.

I've only seen a few faulty mass air meters, buying genuine is a no-brainer though 3rd party stuff on mercs is a no-go, what you have to realise is that the air mass meter along with many other things isn't plug and play you have to reteach them to the ecu using the mercedes diagnostic program or the fault will reoccur!

yeah some of the service light resets are "interesting" certainly made awkward deliberately, and yeah it can be costly but if the vehicle is only a year old for instance you still have two years unlimited mileage warranty, there aren't many vehicles cheap to repair anymore to be fair! (i'm not just trying to defend merc btw)

I sell a few, but only really know about SL's and the various 63's

They all seem VERY strong. I'm not much a fan if the interiors though.

I work in a Merc approved bodyshop and i get sent on all the merc coarses and only i can use our £10k Merc Star machine(diagnostic).

Get to work on all mercs ranging from old ones right upto new ones including all vans and ambulances.

The newer mercs really are built well(204,212 etc)and very very nice.Get loads of reps cars in with mega miles and interior and engines look and run like they have 20k miles on.Ive never been into mercs but i am now.

Go for it,and E350's are rapid!

Bit of a hi jack but does any one have an idea why my dad's Mercedes S class 2.5 diesel (? Might be 3.0) cuts the fuel at 3k when revved and dies straight away after?! It's a 04 plate

I'll try and get some more details. They're just off the top of my head

As this forum is "General Car Chat" anything is allowed. However what is not allowed is your frankly awful attitude, so enjoy a 2 week break from the forum with my compliments.

possible low fuel pressure issue, when was the fuel filter last changed?, its guess work without a star diagnosis computer though, there's plenty of independent specialists with them aswell as Merc rents them out.
