Bad Noise From The Front Of The Car!

Recommended Posts

TRMB84GTI

Hi Guys I hope this the right area to post for this topic? My dad and I were driving back from Curborough this afternoon when this really bad rubbing/vibration noise started. It only did it once before and went away quickly so I ignored it. This time it stayed with us for majority of the journey home. The noise is at its worst in 4th gear and goes away when turning left or applying the brakes. I stopped at the shops for 10 mins and got back into the car and it has stopped.

We both thought it might be something to do with the brakes but I am not confident. The car had not been used a lot until I bought a couple of months ago and I only use it normally to run to and from work, so the long journey today probably caused it to get worse? It is only a basic 900cc XE so fingers crossed it is a basic issue? Any help would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Tom

Would take the wheels off and have a good check of the brakes, could very well be worn out pads/shoes

Not a vibrating heat shield or something similar?? I had one that started to vibrate on a long journey recently but has not been heard before or since

I'd bet it's the differential bearings .. common problem on MA gearboxes .

A heat shield will be a tinny rattle, not so much vibration, just for reference

Binding front brake can cause similar symptoms, noises and vibration after a few miles too after it heats up. Dabbing the brake will usually briefly silence it.

Give away is one brake getting noticeably hotter than the other, and being harder to spin the wheel with the car jacked up (when hot - will often be OK when cold)
