Chrome Lip Alloy Refurb

Recommended Posts

Kezzer30

Ok so recently purchased some deep dish alloys with a chrome lip for my 205 , i bought them 2nd hand and got them for 220 delivered with no tyres .

The alloys in topic are 15inch autech deep dish split rim style alloys

Now they turned up yesterday and 2 were ok but 2 had some bad damage on the outer lip

So today i decided to have ago 1st ever Attempt at a refurb , to do one of the worst 2

Here is how it started

FCED78B4-07C7-4554-8F63-A86C9E69747A-319

EF85AAA4-80F3-436E-B53A-CA4134D781B4-319

C2163DAA-DC81-4874-A20E-011442E0035E-319

So thats all the same alloy as u can see not looking too good

Anyway 2-3hours of my time later (on just this alloy)( still 3 to do ).

Here it is now

Did you do the 'car up on axle stands lathe' trick?

Good job. I guess they are not lacquered on the rim.

They look a pain to keep clean around the fake bolts and this is where they may bubble up (under any lacquer) in time. The Gutmann fake splits often did this.

If you like them, stick em on a GTI as they are pretty old school style, like Brock alloys back in the day and a 205 really suits a dish.

(1.9 Speedlines are for people who always have fish on a Friday :P)

I'm partial to fish on a Friday. But since the wife is out on the lash and I'm in charge of the kids I introduced them to Chilli Dogs.

Basically I used a lot of sand paper ranging from 120grit to 2500 grit , buffing compound , auto seal metal polish , a few microfibres cloths and a buffer .

On these there is a chrome coating , the trick is to remove the coating fully and sand down the damaged areas as much as possible , in some cases people use dremels to smooth off bad grazes . Once it's all removed use some compound to smooth off the surface and then plenty of metal polish ( the expensive stuff) .

Only issue is they will need to be kept on top of so I plan to keep the, polished up once on the car

Overall I'm delighted they look better now than new as the coating isn't a shiny and as mirror effect etc

Ps the entire reason I'm putting these on is the fact the 205 looks great (IMO) with dishes on. But I will be keeping my speed lines as winter wheels etc

220 delivered to my front door .

However they where slightly more ruffed up than I thought but I did not complain to the buyer as he did have pics of them but it was hard to tell they where as damaged on the lips , so it was my own risk but all in all 220 wasn't too bad IMO could have been better but could have been worse .

And as its cost me near nothing to refurb them I'm delighted as it near mint condition there easily worth 220 etc

Good work, look much better, be interesting to see how they look on a 205, reminds me of Mark (Pugboyracer's) alloys, duno if anyone has a pic? They suited it very well.

Edit: here's Mark's car http://www.205gtidrivers.com/cars.php?user=pugboyracer

I've done quite a few sets of wheels, bought a cheap polishing kit off Ebay, came with some polish and various drill attachments, worked a treat, also lots of elbow grease with wet and dry! It does take a lot of effort, but quite satisfying!

i polished the outer lip on my 1.9 speedlines. they look ace well worth doing, once done i suggest using g3 cutting compound to polish them right up, then laquer the entire wheel. they keep a lot better and wont dull the alloy when the weather hits .

I just skim my PTS wheels with some fine wet and dry on a sanding block to keep the edges shiny

Bloody good job..

I have used autoseal on my 1.9 lips using nothing but a polish in cloth and get impressive results..
