Which Caliper Is A Better Design?

Recommended Posts

I noticed people talking about different types of calipers so wanted to check quickly what the differences between the 306 XSi / HDi 266mm Lucas brakes and 306 DTurbo 247mm Lucas brakes were (other than disc size ofc).

Girling and ATE ring a bell from a similar topic before: http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=147288&hl=

I've got some parts to fit that should raise power to around 160 bhp so want to ensure I have decent stopping power.

Also my current brakes have developed a squeeking noise and aren't all that good so will be happy to upgrade.

IIRC anything bigger than 247 and you have to change the hoses too?

Lastly are 306 247mm DTurbo brakes the same as the 247mm fitted to 205 1.9 GTI's.

Cheers!

I find the standard GTi from brakes to be more than enough as long as decent pads, discs and fluid are used.

Strip them, clean them and they are great!

266mm brakes are usually fine with standard hoses (on GTi's at least) but 283mm (GTi-6 etc) typically need longer hoses.

Personally, I prefer the Lucas-Girling type calipers in terms of performance and longevity to ATE and Bendix.

I'm firmly in the camp that you don't need bigger brakes on a road going 205, although those coming from a modern over-servo'd car will probably think that bigger brakes are needed as standard brakes will feel a little underwhelming by comparison - they're not of course providing they're in good working order, but they feel it if you're used to requiring so little pedal effort for a given braking effort..

What type of caliper design are the 266's? Lucas-girling?

Yes, or certainly the variants that I've seen all are.

Earlier ones with 54mm piston are lucas/girling, later ones with 57mm piston will most likely be Bosch .Both use 266 discs.

The Bosch calipers are the same basic design anyway though

there are 54mm pistons in the bosch calipers over 266mm dics, there are two types of 266mm dics, and at least 4 different pads, two lucas/girling, and two bosch.
