Gear Change - 205 Gti In The Top Ten Best Ever

Recommended Posts

Projectuno

Evo magazine rated the 205 GTi in the top ten gear change for a manual car ever, alongside the likes of the Mclaren F1, Honda Integra Type R, Audi R8 etc.

I have to agree, it is a joy to use.

Really, how much did Pug pay them to say that then?

It is one of the slickest ever, one finger changing.

Having replaced everything that could be replaced in the linkage system when I helped put DrSarty's white 205 together, and sat there playing making engine noises, I have to agree.

Most 205's nowadays have at least some worn bushes and linkages somewhere along the line, but with fresh & tight components the BE boxes actually feel quite nice.

You have a porridge gear stick haha mine was like that for months didnt realise thats not how they were suppose to be , until one day i went to put it into 1st and nearly fell into the passenger footwell haha , after a stressful day driving it in 3rd to the garage when i got it back i was amazed its fantastic now haha

Ps just re-read you post (not your car) but most cars haha still , stirring porridge for the win lmao

I don't have a 205 any more ;) Though the 306 is more or less the same thing anyway. There's a teeny bit of fore-aft play in it but otherwise it's actually quite sharp. I've been repeatedly pleasantly surprised by this 306 to be honest. The rest of you on this forum who turned it down definitely missed out!

The gear change in my rallye with the extended leaver and all refreshed bearing and rods was sublime, by far the best gear change experience I've ever had

I'm with Ali & Mei on this. :)

I've got one of MIles' original extended gearsticks, Baker BM phosphor kit bushed quadrant, new oe bushes on the stick & even though I'm still to drive the car, it just feels absolutely fantastic sniking through the gears & I can't wait to put it into use. :D

I'm surprised by that.

With the bushes, rods etc replaced it's certainly not a bad change and undoubtedly a world away from a typical 205 that's vague and sloppy, but in the top 10 ever? Really?

Maybe I've just been spoilt by my (now sadly departed) MX-5, but the 205 is distinctly second rate compared to that - like a well oiled rifle bolt, as many a review has said.

C5 is very good cable shift, but I don't hear many praises of it

I personally think the ford puma 1.7 is better than the 205, although mine does suffer soup syndrome.

I don't rate the gearchange anything special. It's good if you don't rush it but far from great. I feel my diesel Accord is better: time it right and you can change with one finger.

I would have to say that in my personal opinion, it is better than every car mentioned above, having driven all of them and most cars in evo's top ten, if you drive a 205 GTi as they were intended, they are truly effortless and a joy to use.

I guess I am spoilt having a low mileage car, won't stay low mileage for too long the amount it is getting used (enjoyed)!

Everything in mine is less than 2000 miles old, and it's good.............but not that good!

My ford racing puma box was the most joyous gear change and gearbox I've ever experienced and anyone who drove my car had experienced.

However for a 28 year old design it is magnificent by today's standards love it!

205 gear change is great, if it wasn't like rowing!! Fortunately the quickshift fixes it....
