How Easy To Convert 1.6Gti Engine To 1.9Gti ?

Recommended Posts

Assuming that one had a good 1.6 engine and a donor 1.9 engine to use for parts, how easy would it be to do the conversion?

I'm kinda thinking:

- use the sump sandwitch plate from the 1.9

- transfer crank and (probably) pistons etc (probably easier in one lot)

- transfer 1.9 wet liners, to match wear pattern (or get new ones, if easier)

Would this be all that's needed or am I missing stuff?

If you've got a good 1.6 engine already, then i'd just stick with that tbh. If your planing on stripping the engine then i would budget to rebuild it, as the chances are it will require one. Also if you go 1.9 you'll need the dizzy, afm and ecu.

injectors, afm, ecu, essentially the blocks are identical bar pistons/rods/crank/spacer/sump/oil cooler afaiaa

Good stuff, thanks - is the cylinder head the same on both capacities?

How 'easy' is it to replace the wet liners?

if your going to rebuild it would it not make sense to just rebuild the 1.9

Engine wise it's just

1. Crank

2. Rods

3. Cam

1.6 sump is fine to use

you can use, 1.9 Pistons

But if swapping parts around then it all needs to be checked and replaced.

I did my CTi like this, Mainly to keep the external parts all looking original along with the engine number,

Ah this is for the 1.9 with the broken mounts? wet liners aren't too bad to replace, need new seals at the bottom when you do. It's not going to be a cheap process with gasket sets, seals, shells etc...

Spot on, Chris-GTI, you're right !

As mentioned in another thread, my 1.9 engine has got broken mountings in the aluminium of both the head & block, for reasons you can read elsewhere, so I'm just thinking outside the box, along the lines of re-building around another head & block, as it seems like there are more 1.6 engines around to buy.
