Help For Rebuild! Upgrades?

Recommended Posts

jameswallace.

Im gunna having my top end rebuilt in april and need some help as I am clueless on what I can do to add a little bit extra power while im at it.

I was thinking of changing the cams for fast road one or something simillar is this worth doing?

Also my injectors could do with a clean but I was also thinking about uprated injectors if there are any? Perhaps the ones from the 1.9?

If these are possibilities? What would I need to do to link it all together e.g. change the ecu or what?

Just looking for little things I could tweak to improve running and performance?

If anyone knows of any build threads that might help me, thats would be appreciated

Or any other things which I could do while im at it but I have a budget limit of about a grand

Thanks J

telling us which engine it is and your budget would be a start...

Hahha yup clearly my bad! Its a 1.6 8valve and probably about 400-700 realistically for parts

that'll be about enough for a rebuild alone then.

Top end rebuild should come in a fair bit under that if you're not touching the bottom end, especially if you're doing the assembly/disassembly yourself....

Dare I say it, but if you're wanting more power, the most sensible option is to get a 1.9 bottom end (or complete engine) IMO unless you've a particular reason why you want to stay with a 1.6. You'll lose a little of the revviness, but that's about the only downside.

always found the 1.6 to deliver more power than a 1.9. When I used to rolling road my old 1.6 it, and other 1.6s, always pulled more bhp than the 1.9s. I do prefer the low end from a 1.9 though which does give the sense of more /urgency.

Keep the engine and get it running tip top!!

Yeh I wanna keep the same engine I just wanted a to see if I could get a little extra from it! Basically all I want to know is if theres any point putting fast road cams in when I rebuild the top end? That money can go to better use for some other part of the car like the rear beam which sounds rotten

If your rear beam is busted then a rebuild on that is much more sensible than a fast road cam.

You can pick up a decent 1.9 block for pennies though, may as well just get that and rebuild it?

If you must spend money on the engine then going for electronic ignition is much more sensible. I do kind of miss my old 8v.

Suggestion;

1.9 crank + rods, keep your pistons, mild cam, mp3.1 ecu from a zx volcane or bx gti.

Resulting compression will be too high for a standard MP3.1 map though.

The standard 8v already has electronic ignition.

Welsh pug thats exactly what I was wanting just some clear idea of what I can do and what works well together! Somebody must have done something similar to there 1.6?

Anthony do you you have any ideas how I could make it work if mp3.1 wont map to it?

What if I use a bigger head gasket? Would that not lower the compression? Or is thr point to keep the high compression?

I'm with Welshpug. Give the head a 3 angle grind, skim 0.040", shim the valve springs correctly, fit a 270-280 deg cam and 1.9L crank and rods. There's no substitute for cubic inches.

:D Only from my experience from meets. My 1.6 at the time pulled 122..best of the day at Huddersfield GTI centre whilst some modded 1.9s where getting way less. Never seen a standard 1.9 get 130bhp.

Maybe not skim 0.040", will be too much CR with 1.9L crank/rods.

My 1.9 makes 125bhp, albeit a K&N and a exhaust (no difference) and I bought the engine unknown of a gent in north Wales for £50!

All I have done is make sure all the sensors etc are working and replaced serviceable items regularly! So I've lost 3bhp in 26 years. . . I'll live with that!

Oh and a torque curve the 1.6 can only dream of!
