Safety Devices C44 Fitting

Recommended Posts

I’m wondering if any of you that have installed/have a Safety Devices C44 challenge cage in your car might be able to help me with this one!

I’m halfway through fitting one of these; the main mounts are all tacked in/loosely mounted, but there is a bit of an issue with the crossmember that goes across the top of the windscreen- it seems to be sitting about 2cm further back than it should be in my opinion, which means that the tabs on the cage aren’t lining up with the frame of the shell that runs across the top of the screen.

To me, it looks like the rear part of the cage needs tilting forwards slightly, to push the front cage forwards a bit, but this doesn’t seem possible. The mounting plates for the feet on the main hoop have been counter sunk properly and are flat to the body work of the car- the cage feet then sit perfectly flat against these- it looks like if you tilted the cage forward the feet would no longer sit flat against the mounts. Also, if you tilted it at all from its current position I don’t think that the rear beam mounts would a. line up or b. have a long enough thread on the studs to be able to get the nuts on.

So my questions are- should the main hoop be bang on vertical, or ever so slightly off (currently mine seems to roughly follow the lines of the B pillar)? Has anyone else had trouble with getting the front cage far enough forward when mounting?

I’m sure that it’s something simple that I’ve missed/not quite done right- but I was staring at it for ages the other night and couldn’t for the life of me figure it out!

It's all just in loose at the minute so I can soon whip it all out and start again if need be, but I'm just not sure what I need to do differently....

I’ll be going up to the workshop tonight so I’ll try and get some pictures to show you exactly what I mean.

Cheers,

Tim
