Stripped Cambelt On My Van!

Recommended Posts

allye

Here I sit on a campsite in Australia with my van underneath me in bits! Didn't think I would be doing this. <_<

On the way to work on Saturday morning some strange noises, lots of back firing then she conked out. Immediately I knew it was bad. After hiring a trailer and getting a work mate to tow us back I have stripped it today, I initially thought it had snapped but it seems its stripped a good 8inches of teeth off the belt  now as we are tight fisted travelers we are going to just put on a new belt kit and hope for the best. The belt is perished with cracks so I'm suprised it lasted this long. Teach me for buying something with no cam belt history, selling the bastard in a couple weeks too!

So, question. Why has it stripped a load of teeth? Simply due to one tooth failing then a few more going until it stopped?

Also how is the best way to remove the crank pully? Can I simply put it in gear and use that to stop it spinning?

I'll post some picture tomorrow of the belt, its fairly epic!

the last time i saw this was on my ex's mazda 323, taking the cam cover off revealed she had run it too low on oil and the cam had ceased in it's journal, picking up, and causing the belt to strip.

Suggest you have a look at the cam journals.

Been keeping a very close eye on fluid levels and always ,made sure it was topped up with good oil, just checked and the cam pulley is fine and still moving as it should. Not checked the crank yet though as i don't have a 19mm socket and breaker bar which I will blag off some one tomorrow!

So just doing a bit more googling ans ti seems the 2l FE mazda engine in my ford econovan is a non interference engine so I may be lucky

ceased

Ceased past participle, past tense of cease (Verb)

1. Come to an end: "the hostilities had ceased and normal life was resumed"; "on his retirement the job will cease to exist"

2. Bring (a specified action) to an end: "they were asked to cease all military activity."

Seized past participle, past tense of seize (Verb)

1. Take hold of suddenly and forcibly: "she jumped up and seized his arm".

2. Capture (a place) using force.

Does that mean that if it was to say "grammar plod never seize to amaze me" I would in fact be incorrect and should have said "grammar plod never cease to amaze me"???

This sounds like fun.... Or not!!

You still managed to get a trailer and hitch a lift to work none the less!! Impressive!!

Be very good for you if you are lucky enough to be able to get it sorted without any issue!! Does the crank not lock off on the crank side? Is there any way of locking it there??

I've not had a good look to see whether I can lock the crack pulley, although I was under the impression not to undo crank pulley's like this? Its an auto so hopefully park will lock it or put it in gear?

Technically, it's a mix of both then.

Fingers crossed for you buddy, my initial thought was it would be stupidly low compression non interference engine.

Its low compression alright! turns over pretty easy - made me think the rings were shot. I am hoping and praying though, it ran spot on till then and everything seems free from what I can see so should ok!

Campsite cambelt change $140 would make me a happy man.

Dyslexia.. is to blame this time, no other explanation for why I used the wrong word, when i know both and understand the difference between them.. Thank you tom.

Can I make a suggestion, all dyslexics and gramatical underlings submit their posts for spell check in future, perhaps to a mod who is really good at spelling, or perhaps even Testuff, he really likes helping people with their spelling. So that we can save any public humiliation of my disability in future.

Thanks again, and remember, carpe diem!

Justin.

New cambelt on, zero compression :( had a chat with a local mechanic and he thinks even with a new cylinder head there is no guarantee it will go? next step is to take off the head and see what the situation is.

Progress! had a couple hours spare this evening so borrowed some tools and wipped the head off! Despite being bit of a twat to work on everything came apart nicely, nothing sized thank god. Access is also very good from underneath with good ground clearance so its not all bad.

Missing a few teeth.....

It gave me bit of a fight to begin with and will leave me with this little memento to go home with

Why was there no compression?!

A machine shop in town has a recon head on the shelf for a exchange, new head gasket set too. I was worried the rings were going to be shot being on decent millage but I have nice and tight rings so that good  , no scoring on the bores. Also the pistons only have light marks in the cut outs where there was contact so should be good.

An exchange head(which has probably been sitting on the shelf for years and they just want to get rid of it) for somthing like this, I can't see it being very expensive at all. Not worth the effort changing the valves out and lapping the new ones in. In my mind anyway.

What Stef and James said basically! I've seen valves lapped in and compressors used a few times but never done it myself, need to sell it within a couple weeks so didn't want that responsibility! Recon head is $500 exchange so roughly £300 between 2 of us as well so not bad at all.

turn the cam round so each valve is closed then pur water into the inlet or exhaust and hold the head up see iff water drips out from a valve thats ment to be closed, easy way to see if you have bent anything.

What engine is this by the way?

I have done many head rebuilds on the TU 1.1 1.4 engine from belts stripping, usually down to lack of oil, poor maintanence, but sometimes down to camshaft snapping ect

you can see quite clearly that the second cylinder along has a valve flat with the face of the head, where the stems are angled...

Its a mazda FE 2l carb engine in a ford econovan. half of the valves are truly f***ed, no question about that. Putting the new head on today!

Too hot most of them time! Not looking forward to coming home in 10days, still bloody snowing! Endless summer was the idea.

Any way, after the new cambelt solved nothing....

DSCF0380_zpsd973d22c.jpg

I went and got the exchange head as previously mentioned, had to change over cam and tappets etc etc, not done this before but was bloody easy. Got it back together (mid way through)

Runs spot on again :D $700 AUD later mind, that's with me doing all the labour (Still on a campsite remember! Still borrowed tools) and the mechanic just checking my timing and torquing it down! Still need to fiddle the ignition timing as its not as quick as it should be, although doing this is a right pain in the arse finding a balance for the petrol and the LPG with likes being retarded. Oh and we have already sold it for $3250 ^_^
