205 Rallye Idle Problem?

Recommended Posts

jdr

I have a standard 1.4 205 Rallye (it has had a major service and when up to temperature runs really sweet). My rallye is running really well apart from this one issue that happens every so often like once a week. The car sometimes is very hesitant to rev at low speeds. Even if i give it full throttle the revs drop and the car will always cut out especially at junctions and other stops. The battery light often flashes as well. Its very annoying as it makes the car un drivable but the car will start back up fine and after a while the problem fixes its self.

From research on here It sounds like the idle control valve could need cleaning? If so can someone show me a picture of where it is and how to access / clean it?

The problem never happened before the car had a new coil pack if this makes any difference?

Thanks.

Are you sure you have the right coil? Why was the coil replaced? Worth checking the alternator is charging correctly, if it was fine before the coil change, that would be my first port of call. Does it mainly do this when hot?

The coil was replaced because the car refused to start. The car does it more when its cold.

So the car refused to start before the coil change, rather than was fine before? Would help to have the whole story, has the car been sat for a while, did it just cut out and not restart? Did you run it low on fuel, may have some crap in the idle jets, have you replaced the fuel filter? checked for air leaks?

Thank you for the help. The car was used regularly over summer, It had a big service with: spark plugs, air filter, oil filter and new oil. I have not replaced the fuel filter. The car was ran up to temperature once a week after the service. In winter I left the car to warm up on my drive with the choke on, when i came back it had cut out and from there it didn't start again. To be fair there wasn't much fuel in the car at the time. At a garage they diagnosed it as the coil pack.

I couldn't find any air leaks.

The carb is the only part of the car that has been left alone. My rallye is on 141,000 miles.

Could be crap in the jets as previously said.. thats where i'd personally start. Mine run very lumpy when i first go it where it had been sitting in a garage, i replaced it for a fresher carb and all was well again.

Im not sure if its fixed it properly but I sprayed the carb with carb cleaner. Runs a lot better now, I probably do need to strip the carb down and properly clean it for a long term fix.
